AThe frosting took all my food coloring. I added the rest of my red coloring to the cake mix. It was only enough to make pink. I tried adding Burgundy and it started turning purple. So I thought enough pink would get red. I still have pink. So I thought a dab of brown would darken. I still have pink. I thought kool aide is red. I added a sprinkle (not enough to change flavor) It didn't do anything to the color. So idk what to do. I can't get to the store this late. What do I do? Is there a color combo I can use to make red?

AThere's various ways. Here are the two ive done:

1) start with a pink color and get a really really deep pink then add red until you get there

2) use powdered food colors. This my preferred method.

Remember that colors deepen over time, so it's best to try and make icing ahead of time so you can let it sit before adding more color.

Red is a primary color -- you can't make it.

Yeah you can't make red.  Go buy some red or buy red fondant from now on (that's what I do).  I hate coloring red and black anything.

I make MMF.  I add melted Red candy melts to the melted Marshmallows then add the powdered sugar.  This works really well and there is no need to add some much red coloring.

How much red candy melts do you add? :) would you mind sharing your recipe for red mmf? :) i tried making chocolate mmf using chocolate chips and it was a disaster! So i just buy ready made red/black. Expensive and yucky! :(

RED MMF

10oz Generic Mini Marshmallows (since I didn't need an entire batch)
Approximately 1 1/2 lbs C&H Powdered Sugar, Sifted
4oz (approx 1/2 Cup) melted Wilton Red Candy Melts
1/3 tsp Americolor Super Red
1 Tbs Water

Here are the step by step:

1 Melt Candy Melts and Marshmallows separately

2 Add the melted candy melts into the melted marshmallows
3 Add any additional coloring to achieve the color you want.  Remember that it will get a deeper color as it sets.
4 Stir all together
5 Pour the mixture into the Powder Sugar and Knead, Knead until it is all combined
6 Coat well with shortening, double wrap with saran wrap and store in an air tight container to set and until ready to use.

You can use this recipe with any color candy melts.  I make black fondant using the black candy melts and it works great.
