When you photograph your cakes, always clean up the background. I love photoshop because I can get rid of things and just show my cakes. You don't want clutter behind the photo of your cake, the cake won't show well no matter how good it is. All you really need to do to get clean photos is purchase mounting board and drape it in fabric behind and around the cake. It's easy and involves little to no photography skill.
The soccer ball cake was really good, but for the team logo on the front try using a frozen buttercream transfer of the design. I did this for a soccer jersey shirt and it looked way better than if I had freehanded it.
AOh my goodness! It must have taken ages to make all those icons for the iPhone! Nice job! What size was that cake?
Hi as you wish, thank you for your nice comments, I used a 12" x 8" rectangle tin. I loved the fact that there was no shaping to do at all, perfect shape right out of the tin. I baked a madeira cake sliced it onto 3 and filled and covered it with white chocolate ganache and the middle layer was white ganache and jam. The decorating only took my 2 days (not sure if that's good or slow lol) The most time consuming part was the app icons. I would have loved to have had a go at Facebook, twitter, and angry birds apps but I made it exactly with the exact apps that my niece has on her iPhone. Thank you for the interest and sorry if I have given you far more info than you wanted.

Hi Norasmom, Thank you so much for your advice it was so helpful. I never really thought about the background when taking photo's but your right it looks bad having clutter. I am going to be looking at Photoshop and such. I was so disappointed with the logo on the front, I tried doing it freehand with icing pens and not only did it spoil the look of the cake but even though I put it in the fridge as soon as I had done it, the icing then ran. This one was the first cake I had ever made as an order, I didn't actually sell it I just asked her to cover the cost of ingredients as I assume my cakes are not good enough to buy.
Again thank you for helping and advising and am I anywhere near good enough to charge rather than just give my cakes away??

Wow I have just looked up frozen buttercream transfer as I had not herd of it before, and wow that's an awesome way of getting your design onto your cake ty so much
Truth, I personally do not think that you are ready to be selling your cakes. Keep practicing, though, and you will get there.
There's always room for improvement for everyone, no matter how skilled or not. I don't think you should be selling cakes yet but you could practice for your family, friends or neighbors in the mean time.
I would suggest to just keep practicing. Try to pay attention to the details (big and small) and improve on your neatness.
Also there is a photo with an ashtray full of cigarettes in the background and that's really off putting- and honestly- just gross. I think it's the elephant in the mud cake? I would pay attention to things like that in the future.
Thank you all for you help and advice, I didn't;t even realise at the time that I had that in the background of the elephant cake I just brought it into the room for more light. I agree I need to pay attention to details all round big and small and yeah I am not very neat at the moment. I love doing these cakes so no way I am going to stop practicing, I have been asked if I could make an Easter these cake and donate it for an Easter raffle. I also have 3 relatives born 3 June, my 1 of my 4 son's 1 of my nieces and my brothers sis in law, so deffo more practice cakes coming up. I will post them as I do them baring in mind all the advice I have been given and see if there is any improvement. I also looking for cake decorating classes local to me so I can learn some techniques properly.

ADo people smoke in the same building that you make your cakes in? Because if that smell gets into the cake or is on you when you meet with people or deliver, that will be a really bad situation, especially for future orders. I agree, keep practicing, and eventually they'll be sale worthy. The practicing part is fun, if you ask me. :-)
Hi Norasmom, I have had a look at the transfers and they look awesome have got to have a go lol. Hi AZ Conture, point well and truly taken about the smoking, I have told hubby that he can either give up or smoke outside, he is very encouraging about my cake making so if he wants me to succeed then I 'm sure he will understand...eventually lol. I love the practice it is fun.
