Best Way To Attach Metal Parts To A Cake

Just wondered when using flower wires best way to insert in cake. Straws give sturdy hold but concerned cake left inside straw may be contaminated by wire. Spaghetti snaps if topper too heavy.
I have ordered some flower picks but if you have a thin wire they would wobble around inside pick.
Also if using rhinestone ribbons on a cake - do you have to use normal ribbon first then rhinestone on top? I see some cakes just have the rhinestone ribbon attached directly to icing.
Many thanks cake peeps

I put paste inside the posy pick before I put the wires in ... stops the wires moving around. You might just be able to see on this most recent cake I did:
But if it's only 1 or 2 wires, you can use a straw... when you pull the straw out, the cake inside comes with it. No-one will eat it!!
Sorry, not sure what you mean by rhinestone ribbon?

Thanks so much. I didn't think of filling the pick! I have used straws successfully but was never sure whether the cake remained when you pulled straw out.
Here is a link to rhinestone ribbon
So, this type:

is actually just faceted plastic. I have used it... I used a sanitiser to give it a quick wipe over with (the type you use on kitchen work surfaces - once dry, they are safe to put food on) and then use it directly on the cake.
