AMy 15 yo daughter and I are fairly new to the baking game. We are learning a lot of new techniques and desperately want suggestions for a cupcake icing that is not super sweet and holds up. Any suggestions are apprrciated!!

AHave you tried using ricotta cheese, it is light and with a little icing sugar and flavouring makes a great topping. I find cream cheese a little heavy.

ASwiss meringue buttercream or Italian meringue buttercream. Are less sweet than American buttercream . Search recipes for the various versions and flavor combinations. Hth
