I have a wedding consult set up next month with a bride. She emailed me a picture last nightof a cake she likes and wanted to know if 3 tier was going to look to 'stumpy' as another cake decorator told her it would. The decorator told her she could do the cake as a 5 tier so it wouldn't look 'stumpy'. The bride needs the cake to feed 115! I was floored when I read this post! Granted, I include the whole cake in my serving size as I do an anniversary coupon, but even not including the top tier in the serving size and starting with a 4 tier top, I still couldn't calculate it to work out close to 115 servings for 5 tiers. I'm basing this on 1x2x4 slices. Am I missing something here or is this other decorator way off base? This poor bride is going to be very confused now with wrong information. Just wanted to vent/share. Still can't get over that one.

wow--i think i would avoid comparing to the other proposal--i think i would just explain how i would do it--that i could make the cake look beautiful for her--
115 serving 5 tier is not stumpy it would be like an arrow--but i mean you could use little one of two layer short tiers in there too--but of course not necessary for so few servings--but i'd just tell her what i could do that is beautiful and let her do the comparisons--
but i mean you could do a 3x5x7x9x11--but that's cutting it to the nub--maybe change the 11 for a 12 to be sure of enough servings--if a 5-tier is what the bride wants
Oh, I did tell her how I could make it look nice for her. I didn't 'compare' myself to the other decorator. I don't want to put anyone else's work down at all. The bride didn't ask for a 5 tier. Once this other person suggested a 3 tier would look 'stumpy' she wanted my opinion on whether a 3 tier would look 'stumpy'. I told her it really comes down to the look that she wants (as the 5 tier would be very narrow) and that we could look at pictures of different sizes to see what she likes. I just surprised that anyone would suggest doing a 5 tier cake for 115 people. The cake is the ribbon crisscross along the tiers with the big flowers on the side and top.
well yeah, i didn't mean to say you were doing any of that stuff--i was just saying what i would do which obviously is the same thing you do--
the three tiered wedding cake for 100 is a standard. Unless the bride wants a 14 x 12 x 8 I'm not sure how it could look stumpy. But I like how the other baker solved the problem with upselling...
