Cake sizes

Hi guys
I have a cake to do for a high tea in February but I can't work out what sizes to make the cakes.
I need to feed around 250 people but it's no big deal if I have to make a few extra cakes for the kitchen.

I have attached (hopefully) a rough drawing of what I was thinking.
If you could give me some ideas as to cake sizes I would really appreciate it.

That is a really cute design, 4 tiers using these sizes,10 -12 -14 - 16 would serve 250 people. I don't know if you want to make it quite that big or not. You could also make it smaller, 4 - 6 -10 and half sheet or full sheet made to look like a table with teacup placements. Just tossing out a few ideas, HTH

I don't think I want to make it that big, I wouldn't be able to lift it! Lol.

What would you suggest for cake height?
I don't know whether to make them higher than usual to balance it out?
I've never made a cake like this before so I need all the help I can get!

I don't have any idea what the height should be as I have never made one of these types of cakes before. I imagine they would be  two 2" layers per cake allowing slightly more height because of the angle but I'd just be guessing.

 

I find these cakes so fascinating,  I searched around a little and found these. I also goggled images for gravity defying cakes and found a few promising sites. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more.

Oh, I forgot, a 3 tiered cake of 8 12 and 16 would serve 156, maybe a full sheet to make up the difference. I'm sure with your design any route you take it's going to come out lovely. Good Luck!

I would never have 10" as my top tier...it is just too big.   Is your tea pot going to be cake? 

 

I would do a 6/9/12/16.   That's 200 servings.  You are going to lose some servings in the carving of the tea pot so you will need some supplemental cake somehow...maybe a double quarter sheet kitchen cake...?

If I remember correctly, the Wilton Cake Decorating website gives you information on cake sizing according to how many people.

Hi guys,

Sorry I've taken so long to reply, I've been away over Christmas.

 

Ddaigle- I think your sizes sound pretty good, you don't think the 9 and 12 will be too heavy/ big to have on an angle? Yes, the teapot will be cake, I have a litre Pyrex bowl that I was going to bake the 2 halves in.

 

Also I am doing this cake for free to get my name out there as I have just decided to start charging for my cakes.

It's all about your set up construction for that design.   I have never used any type of PVC construction, but I have seen it done online.   Bronwen Weber does a lot of it.  If you have your construction sound...I think it will be fine.  I just can't tell how to make that happen.   Do a lot of research.

Oh and if anyone has any better ideas for my design.......

 

The theme is rustic and the colours are white, turquoise and brown (think hessian/ burlap)

 

I'm not very good at the design side of things lol so if anyone has any suggestions...
