tardis cake (laying down not brave enough for a vertical one!)

Hi, I've been asked by family to make a tardis cake for an aunt- problem is I'm a novice! I have decided on a flat/2d(?) one........basically not a vertical one as I wasn't sure my stacking skills would hold up under pressure.

My question is I have Regal Ice fondant colours (uk) - can I make the panels in advance and leave to dry? If so how long for? I figured if I make and dry them they will be hard and more precise so when I apply them the cake will look sharp and crisp icon_biggrin.gif

All advice welcome please- cake needs delivering on Boxing Day x

to me it's harder to get things all even steven than to build a tier cake--so if you are comfortable with that part of it sure you can make the panels now --

 

instead of the panels being mitered together--you can cover the sides then just overlap the top panel --that would work --

 

i would be careful of course to use uber straight pans to dry them on--for example i'd not use a sheet pan because they are too wonky not true enough --

 

i would use my square cake pans and my cookie sheets because they are very true and perfectly flat surfaces
