Opening up another session of the FNCC! Everyone is welcome to come share their week, photos of their work, ask for help or try to help someone if they can!

Hi everyone!

 

Well, today is my birthday and the only cake I had this week was my own birthday cake. Now this doesn't happen often. I think in the past 15 years I have gotten to make my own cake twice...ok, maybe 3 times. Usually my younger daughter makes me one (and she's going to this year too but not till next weekend) but this year I had orders the weekend before and after my birthday over in her area so the family celebration has been delayed. Thankfully I don't have any other orders. Turns out that one of my fingers is cracked on the top and one is severely bruised from last week's encounter with the door (the door clearly won that fight!) and I didn't even know if I would be able to pipe anything much less the design I had in mind. So today I taught myself how to pipe with 3 fingers only...missing the middle two. I think it turned out pretty darn good!

 

 

My day was very nice...after I got done with the DMV renewing my license...and work around here for my 2nd job...but then it's been all cake and fun. We are going to cut it in a bit and I'll take a photo of it then too<G> It's a new pink lemonade recipe. The trimmed pieces tasted yummy so I can't wait to try it with the buttercream too! Tomorrow is our real celebrating. We are going to the local pumpkin patch and playing with all the fun stuff there for the entire afternoon! I can't wait!

I've been working on roses and rose buds, mauve/rose colored and they are so pretty. But I just can't seem to make them quickly. And I am way to clumsy with the quick method that uses the 5-petal  cutters. I have success with the old fassioned way by adding one petal at a time.

Happy Birthday Cat!

I am making gumpaste roses and ranunculus.  They take forever...so many petals on each flower, I got through 3 tonight!

Well happy birthday!  I want to make my own birthday cake, just so I can try something new and experiment, but my kids love making me mini-cakes for my birthday (the one day they get to be the cake decorators for me!), and well, how can I say no?  Great piping job, impressive with only three fingers.  I love the colours.

 

I made a horse cake for my friend's daughter's birthday.  I first made a horse cake for my daughter's b-day a year ago, and it's become a very much requested cake.  Somehow this horse photographed funny, though.  In the photo, the ears look too small and the eye seems placed in the wrong spot, but in real life the horse looks properly proportioned.  I might take the cake out again tomorrow before the party and see if I can photograph it from a different angle to see if that makes a difference.

gscout73: I'm the same way...I just can't get the 5 petal thing to work either. I also do it one petal at a time.

 

Norasmom: thank you! I'd love to see a ranuculus if you have a shot you can share?

Luvmykids: I'm sure it's just the angle that you photographed the horse from. I can tell that the ears are bigger than they appear. My favorite part is the mane! Love it!  And, yeah, there's no way I could talk my daughter out of making my cake. I even told her that we can just order dessert from the restaurant next weekend and her answer was along the lines of "Uhhhhh, NO" LOL

Usually, I just get to peek in on the FNCC but not really participate because I'm usually doing things that require me to be covered in powdered sugar.  BUT - I completed all my cakes ahead of time (nothing went wrong...that NEVER happens! lol!) and I get to pop in and say "hi!".  I had two Glam themed black/white Halloween Happy Hour cakes to make, with 18 cupcakes and a Skylanders Portal cake.  This was the 1st time I was able to make a big ol' rose to put on a cake:

Good evening all and a Very Happy Birthday Cat.  Your cake is adorable, I made mine this year which was the first time I ever made my own cake.

 

I was off last weekend, All my orders were either during the week or picked up early Friday so I took some much needed R & R.  Good thing too, I had my mother in the hospital for a couple of days, now I'm playing catch up with the work.

 

A customer ordered a few cakes because she was having out of town guest,  Another ordered a purse cake for her mother in law, due tomorrow, I have another 2 tiered Monster's Inc also due tomorrow.  I might be working a little on the late side for that one.  Cakes are baked and chilled but that's as far as I've gotten on this order.  My last cake for the weekend is a standing lalaloopsy doll cake.  The baby one with the pj's.  This is one going to be the killer.  I'm also doing a number of other things for the dessert table.

morganchampagne - SOOO sweet!  :)

 

2nd cake made for a Glam themed Halloween Happy Hour!

This was cake #2 for the same Ghoul's Night In Happy Hour party - this was on a table with rhinestone studded/swirled black/silver pumpkins. There is a company near my home called Girlfriend Galas and they put together the *best* parties - and I have been lucky enough to be their go-to caker.  The owner has a home/backyard *meant* for entertaining. They have a online store/blog where you can see some of the parties they have thrown.

After a rubbish attempt at my last cake, I was pleased at how well this cake turned out:

 

Laylah's Birthday Cake. Vanilla pink ombre cake with vanilla buttercream on the bottom and chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream on the top. White chocolate ganache and sugarpaste to cover.

 

It was my first time using tappits and I did have a bit of difficulty with them, but hopefully will get better with practise.  I also experimented with the texture mats.

Cute Lizzie!!  Regarding tappits - roll your fondant REALLY thin, let it sit for a bit to harden a tad and then push really hard on the tappit, then give it a good, short, whack on the edge of a counter - make sure it is all straight and then leave it alone for a little bit to harden up some more.
