I want to make a rainbow cake for my daughter's 4th birthday. She asked for a cake with flowers, butterflies and rainbows and I don't think she realises that you can actually make rainbow coloured cake layers, so it's going to be a big surprise when we cut into the cake.

I've found lots of beautiful cakes for inspiration online, but am a bit overwhelmed with the possibilities.

I was thinking of covering the cake in sky blue buttercream then creating fondant grass and flowers up the side and a fondant stand-up rainbow on the top.

How do you decide what to do when faced with so many lovely ideas? I don't want to throw everything at the cake and come up with a monstrosity.

AI'm not a professional.. And I didn't do as great of a job as I wanted to but I was rushing the morning of the girls party. Anyhow they loved this cake I made and I'm sorta proud of it. The 3 cakes are very similar.  It depends on your skill level.  I think the last cake (the white one) pops because of the rainbow colored Happy Birthday banner.  If you can't do that, I don't think the white has a lot of POP to it.

The first cake, the 2 tier, has a rainbow in the sky since the top tier is blue with clouds.  Do you want to make 2 tiers?  

Sometimes it's good to figure out what you do best.  Make the cake work around your skills.

And make it work around how BIG of a cake presentation you want.

I see what you are saying about the white one Lynne3. I think I'll stick with my original plan of a light blue buttercreamed cake, with fondant grass and flowers applied round the bottom. I'll add some clouds and butterflys to the top along with the rainbow. My daughter will probably appreciate lots of colourful flowers more than a few artfully placed butterflys.
