I asked how and she sent me to her facebook page to buy the instructions.  She has a lot of cakes on here posted like this one.  I am not spending $30 for a tutorial.  I have some ideas, as I have done the polka dotted cake and a cake with flowers and butterflies in it.  But this looks like it is all cake.  Any ideas?

I Am Baker does a lot of designs inside her cakes, you could take a look through her blog.

AHmmm ... The cow and strawberries will only look right if viewed from the front (slice through Centre of the cake). I've never done it, but it seems like you could use the same concept as the polkadot cake ... prebake your shape (the cow might have been baked in a cookie cutter) then put it in cake pan with Bayer and bake the cake.

Seems really interesting! If you try it please let us know how it goes :)

TWO OPTIONS.....

If you want an easy answer - pay the $30 !

If you don't think it is worth $30........ start baking, cutting and WASTING cake until you figure it out for yourself

It would be a terrible shame if anyone made a living in the cake business... What offends me about your post is that you specifically asked how this specific person does this and since you are "not spending $30 for a tutorial" expect to get the info for free. Why not post something general? Naming the thread , how does [name of another CC member] do it" is just so incredibly inconsiderate. Now when people google her, your thread showing exactly how to do will will come up. Hope you're happy.

How helpful. Google the person's name as posted n the title of this thread and see what comes up.

AI'm not sure anyone who paid $30 for the tutorial is going to want to share the info with you for free!

Its really inconsiderate to dis someone who obviously spent the time to come up with something so cool you want to learn to do it. You didn't even

come on here to say how talented she is for doing something like this. You only came to complain. I get not wanting to spend $30 but that is your choice. She

has every right to charge for a skill or talent that someone else doesn't have. The above picture obviously took some time to figure out. Probably more than 3 hours which is essentially what you are paying for.

AYeah I have an idea. Start experimenting and practicing till you figure it out. I promise you by the time you're done you would have spent way more than $30. You might have gotten better responses if you'd just left the snark out of it.

AWow ... I didn't even consider it from that perspective. Sorry guys! I just took it as 'this cake lips beat, guys was it made? ' I also didn't realize the person who created the cake is a CC member. I agree with the others, experimenting will cost way more than $30!

AKwitcherbeechin.

$30 is cheap to learn that technique.

I am sure the Bokdoos has spent an incredible amount of time and product teaching herself (himself?) how to do these fantastic cakes.

Complaining that Bokdoos wants remuneration, and a measly $30 at that, cheapens every effort that Bokdoos has made.

Shame on you.

I have seen something similar on pintrest.  I pinned this recipe too.

I did not mean to start an uproar in the community.  I did not think I would be hurting her business, as she does not even live in the states.  I have never seen work like hers.  It is stunning.  If I know a trick of the trade that I learned along the way, I share it.  I was not trying to put her out of business.  I live on a fixed income and don't have $30 spare dollars laying around.  If I could afford her tutorial I would have bought it.  sorry if I offended anyone.

The issue here is that when other people know how to do your 'secret' technique, it is not so secret anymore.   I have seen these cakes where you make pictures inside for years now (including the polka dot cake, the carrot in a garden cake, iambaker's cakes).  I pinned this pumpkin cake almost a year ago.  Now, Bokdoos' cakes are by far the most detailed/pretty, but the fact remains that other people are going to know how to do it, and some of those people may share their information.  If I learned how to do a particular technique by purchasing a tutorial, then I would not feel right about sharing that information.  But if the information is readily available for free on the internet, then I don't feel bad about pointing someone in the right direction.

A $30 tutorial is like any other tool in a professional's arsenal.  Oh, you're not a professional, just a hobbyist?  People spend that all the time on supplies and equipment for their hobbies.  Either way, it isn't much money.

The point being, if you want to do something so cool, that you won't even be able to see if you got it right after baking and delivering it (just crossing your fingers and praying), you best just pony up the $30.00.  It would take 5 to 10 of the same cake, made and then cut, just to make sure you were getting it right when it came down to it.

Liz

Edit:  I see you just posted you live on a fixed income.  It doesn't seem then like you would have the money to experiment on the technique either way (paying for the tutorial or not).  Disregard my comments.

I'm a little confused. You would not share info if you had paid for it. But if someone else shares the info, then you would share that? I'm not judging, only asking for clarification.

I'm sure people who take pens from businesses don't think they are putting them out of business either if they just take a pen. However

That is money you are taking from a company. Its their pen just like its her tutorial. The amount of money banks and companies that

use pens spend putting the same pens that someone just decides is just a pen is money that could go towards their business. My father

is an inventor and helps others who invent things so I'm a bit passionate about this!

You may share what you learn with others but that doesn't mean everyone HAS TO!

Yes people share but its not expected or required its a generosity on their behalf. Who cares where HE lives he put forth the effort and

he should get to charge whatever he wants. Who's not to say he used to be on a fixed income and this tutorial helped him move out of that

bracket. To me this goes right back to customers saying its just cake. Its not and its not JUST a tutorial.

That post sounds like you are completely missing the point.  This has nothing to do with starting an uproar,  whether you can afford to buy the video,  if you were trying to put her out of business or whether or not you share what you know about caking. And hurting her business? And I have trouble understanding how you could  not have a clue that posting a "let's crack the code" of this person's technique who's in the business of selling tutorials wouldn't be somehow detrimental to him?

And while at least you included an apology IF anyone was offended, it sounds like you don't have a clue what you might want to apologize for or who it is that deserves the apology.

No, that is not the issue here.  The point at it's barest bones is that it was unkind and inconsiderate to use the person's name in the post. And to frame it as: she's charging money for this, I'm sure not going to fork any over, let's figure this out. What if someone posted a picture of one of Anne Heap's cake toppers and said the same thing - hey, I'm not going to pay for her Craftsy class, let's figure this out. Nobody does that. They post saying I want to learn how to make a pregnant mommy cake topper.

Nice going using the name again - do you realize not one other person has repeated the name?

I don't see how my request is any different from those stated above.  People are always on here looking for Satin Ice recipe etc.  They don't complain when someone shows them a tool they can get at Home Depot for $2 instead of $20 for similar item from Wilton.

You know, one good this about this post was getting to subscribe to her page. :) I'm a huge fan and $30 for a tutorial to learn what she had to learn through trial and error is a minimal cost. Especially considering the amount of time and cost of supplies it took to come up with this technique!

I agree with the above posters, so glad to have found this thread.  I just ordered a package of her tutorials and can't wait for them to arrive.  Already planning the design of the cake for our family Christmas party (although I'm sure it is a tedious process so I may have to scale it down after getting the tutorials ).  Her website has a small writeup on her background and how she got to where she is now.  She has a very diverse background...gives me hope.  Thanks again for the link.

MimiFix, what I understood her to mean is that she would not share information that someone is selling, even if she bought it. But if a person has freely shared her technique and it's readily available then she would share because that person is not trying to make money from the technique. That's just my understanding of it.

Because trying to invent something new like the $2 item at Home Depot is considered a new invention. For instance a bench scraper at home depot is cheaper than one by wilton but they accomplish the same thing.  Same tool different price. A price is also still paid for someone else invention. They just paid for a different one. Also sometimes there are better ways to accomplish the same thing.

That is different than trying to figure out the exact recipe for Satin Ice which is wrong. We aren't talking about trying to do this on a smaller scale we are talking about wanting this exact design from right underneath the creator. I also think there is a big difference in $30 and $300.

People ask for ways to cut their cake like the AGBAY they don't say hey I want the blueprints for AGBAY so I can make my own and pay nothing.

The question posed was for this exact cake not technique. The OP already stated they had done various other cakes similar to this one. The OP knew somewhat of the technique they stated similar cakes they had already done. The OP wanted the blueprints to this exact one.
