AAlright so I got a cake mix and some canned frostingto make my father in law a quick birthday cake. I'm using two box mixes baked seperately in 10" pans stackes on top of each other. We also picked up 2 cans of frosting (betty crocker I think). I'm worried that I won't have enough to fill and frost and modestly decorate the cake. Can I beat in some butter with my electric mixer? Do you think it would incorporate well? Canned frosting is on the sweet side so maybe it will even it out?

AI would think butter could make canned frosting goopier. I could be wrong, as I've never tried it.

ADo you think I'd have enough without doing any of this?

AI think it's possible you'd have enough with what you've got. Canned icing can be so soft, can you decorate/pipe much with it anyway?

AHopefully it turns out OK. Wish I could be more help, but I usually have a container of buttercream hanging around for those last minute things. I actually did that tonight. I had a chocolate layer in the freezer, and some ABC in the fridge, so I slapped them together and voila! (Waalaaa? Lol) Dessert!

AI just want everyone to know that this is indeed not enough to properly ice and fill a 10" cake with two 1" or so layers.

A little late, I know, but for future reference, whipping canned frosting in the KA will increase the volume so it goes further.  It also gives it a fluffier texture, still heavier than buttercream but closer than what you started with. I've also heard of people adding cream cheese and melted chocolate to give it a  more "homemade" flavor which would also increase the volume.

AOK. Good to know it wasn't enough. Well, not good, but you get it.
