I'm just full of questions today :)
I'm making an 'elmo popping out of cake' in September. I did a trial run with RKT and royal icing and it turned out fab (except the arms fell off, but I think I know why)... I didn't bank on Elmo being so darned heavy though! For some reason I thought RKT would be lighter!
I want to make Elmo in advance - how do I support his weight? I ideally would like to make him plus the support together and then just be able to plop it on the cake on the day. I guess dowels/straws in the main tier for support. If I put him on cardboard covered in fondant, and then just place that on the dowels, with royal icing as glue, would that be enough to keep him in place? I wanted to make the support (round cardboard I'm thinking) with the 'burst through' bits on it so it can dry... anybody got any experience of this? I don't want it to look rubbish either - it needs to look like it's all part of the one cake.

Royal bakery fb page, has a tutorial with a super hero bursting out of the top of cake. Maybe that would be helpful.
