I've been doing cakes for a year now and i'm limited to craft stores that carry cake supplies, so i've had to use Wilton things here and there. But i'm not overly impressed, and i've read alot on here about Wilton being less than excellent when it comes to their fondant and their gel colors and pearl dust. Does anyone have strong suggestions on good products? I like Satin ice fondant or I make my own. But I have to order any pearl dust online, so I need suggestions on the best stuff out there that people have tried. and the best online websites to use to get products.

If you have a Sur La Table in your area they carry a lot of Ateco and Fat Daddios products. I also find random cake items in Williams-Sonoma now and then, like all-natural sprinkles and sugars for $1 a jar the other day!

Now that they're readily available, I prefer to use edible, FDA approved dusts.  I buy from sugarpaste.com and thesugarart (they have a website, but it sucks, so I contact them through Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/thesugarart   )   Both have excellent products and great people.

As for other types of products--and, by the way, Wilton makes some fine stuff and a lot of the bashing is undeserved, but I think it makes some feel superior when they can say that they use something that the "commoner" doesn't use--I go to fondant source .com  (run it all together for the actual website).  If you use "cakecentral" as a coupon code, you get 10% off.  Again, a nice selection and nice people.

Oh no, I'm not trying to bash Wilton whatsoever, I own lots of Wilton products. I'm just not a fan of their fondant. and I've never used pearldust but what i've read is theirs isn't the best. I'm not saying Wilton as a whole is bad because I don't beleive that at all. I'm just saying, I've done lots of reading and alot of other cakers have said they are better dusts out there than Wiltons.

Wilton petal dust is terrible, you're better off getting them from anywhere else. CountryKitchenSA.com sells a lot of stuff, Global Sugar Art, any of them will sell pretty much the same things. Use the paypal option if they have one, since there's been issues with credit card numbers being stolen from online cake sites in the past. You can also get a lot of modeling tools and cutters etc in the clay section of craft stores. I saw that they're selling plunger cutters in the clay section that are exactly the same as some cake ones that I've seen, they're just repackaged for clay use. And modeling tools that you get for clay are generally sturdier than cake decorating versions.
