AHello! I had a wedding cake a few weekends ago , and I thought that everything looked good , until I got to the venue. The groom was waiting there, and first thing when I set the cake down he was cutting the cake up. He exclaimed that it was nothing like they had wanted ( they had originally showed me a picture ) and that it was totally the wrong colour and just kept going on. There were many similar things in the picture that they showed me that i had on the cake but at the time that i went over the contract i said it was not going to look 100% like the picture and everyone is their own artist, they signed and agreed to this. There were a few cracks from the ride in that I was fixing up as he is yelling at me for delivering this cake that he did not order. At the end I offered to give him back $200 ( they only paid $325) because they were so unhappy with the cake. I figured since they still had the cake to serve to their guests that was a good amount.

He called me on the Wednesday after the wedding and then called me again on the Saturday but I was on vacation with no phone so i hadn't had a chance to call him back. He claims that the cake was inedible, that when the staff at the venue went to cut it it was too hard .... I know the cake was moist ... I had baked it 2 days prior to the wedding and stored it properly! Regardless , I just want to get the matter dealt with, so I got my husband to send him an email explaining that I did get the messages from him and when I would be back from vacation I would send him over the rest of the money, he even gave them the specific date as to when i would send him over the money, also explaining i had no access to phone and limited Internet access. He then tried calling my phone 4 times! I just want him to stop calling me . I said I would send him over the rest of the money when I got back from vacation so why does he keep calling! I don't know how to put it nicely that after his money is returned I don't want him contacting me anymore! Help!!

Can you post pictures of both cakes? What a crappy way to spend your honeymoon harassing the caterer. Betting he is a miserable person all of the time. But it is good of you to give the money back...even with that clause in your contract. I would definitely had talked with people from the venue before offering a full refund though.

ASo send him a check and be done with it. I don't think you'll have to worry about hearing from him again after you do.

Ai. don't see where she's said she's paid him anything so far. Just that she offered to refund $200 and then went on vacation. And honestly I'd like to see the cake they wanted and the cake that was produced in order to offer any kind of advice regarding refunds. He may deserve the whole amount for all we know. Sorry but she may have agreed to do something that was beyond her skill set. Hard to tell since the op is a newbie that joined today...

agreed...same reason I asked for pics. Not having the cake you want on your wedding day sucks a big one. I had so many expectations at my wedding that nothing could meet them. I was miserable the whole time. Probably a premonition of things to come.

AHey ladies! I don't have the pictures on me but I will post them later! I gave him back the $200 right away , the same day of the wedding! This has never happened to me before And I felt so bad that they didn't like it that I didn't even think about not giving him some of the money back! I am putting the cheque in the mail today but I just feel like he's still going to show up at my door wanting more!

Hope it isn't that cake, AZCouture . . .

Although the original is well done, it is pretty ugly for a wedding cake.  Tires??

'A few defects due to Maker being unskilled. Uncut, along with several awful cupcakes for free' That's funny, it's got 4 days left!

Oh gosh, I really hope that's not your cake ;)

WOW AZCouture...I just read that on ebay.   Guess the guy just wants to publicize his pissed-off-ness.

How would someone even have the nerve to show up with that? Couldn't the baker see how awful it is???

I went on ebay  and just left this comment to the seller.

I fully understand this...and it is funny...but I have to say something...this happens all the time when couples choose to go with an inexperienced cake decorator because they were cheaper. I really don't know if this is what happened to you, but the fact that you yourself called the decorator (or hack in this case) 'inexperienced' tells me you at least knew they were limited in their skill set but chose to use them anyway.  As someone who is in this business, I hear from people all the time how 'expensive' I am and how they know someone who can do the 'same cake' for $50 (when I quoted $150).   Then they are outraged when they get something like this.
I am so sorry this happened to you...but it is a great example to show others who think price is the deciding factor because 'it's just cake...how hard can it be?'    Again...don't know if this was your situation but it is sadly familiar.  I hope you got a refund.

I always prepare a contract up front that has to be signed and attached to a 50% deposit (of which only half is refundable) before I will even secure the date for the customer and this is AFTER we go over the entire order, look, design and flavors.  If the custom cancels 2 weeks before the event, they will get half of their deposit back and if they cancel less than 1 week prior, they will be out any money paid.  I have been screwed a couple of times by brides that had no business buying such an expensive cake when they couldn't afford it so I take every precaution necessary now.

Good luck to you!
