AI really want to make this cake for my daughter. I am wondering if a 9x13 torted for the bottom and a 6 inch for the top would work? I am VERY new at this, so any advise is appreciated! I also wonder if anyone sells those wafers used for the doors and windows. Do you think 2 batches of buttercream would be enough? Also 1 batch of WASC mix work for both cakes?

cute, when you say 9x13 torted, are you meaning one layer and split into two, or a two layer cake with filling? Because the bottom layer looks like two cakes on top of each other. I would think two batches of buttercream would be enough. I am sorry I don't know what WASC mix is. good luck.

AI was thinking 1 cake split in two. I think 2 9x13's would make too much cake?feeding about 20 people including kids.

AMaybe I should get a different sized pan for the bottom?

The bottom tier is thicker than 2" so you need to do 2 layers. Even using a 7 or 8" for your bottom tier is going to leave you with extra cake but since it is for your family who cares? Who doesn't love leftover BD cake?I would do 2 layers of 8" for the bottom and a 6" 2 layer for the top. A WASC using 2 boxes is equal to 3 box mixes. That should be enough for this cake (personally I would make the top using my 3" deep pan) I seen similiar cookies at WalMart yesterday. Get creative using whatever you can find..and post pictures! Good luck

AThanks! How much buttercream should I make? If I do 2 layers for each the square and round, do I just put a filling in between the 2 layers? Or cut and make 4 layers? Does that make sense? I really don't know what I'm doing LOL. I have some dowels, I would need to support the upper round cake right?

Just because the pic you show is made up of 2 layers for each tier does not mean you have to make yours like that :)  But it will make it look better overall if you do 2 layers per tier.

As for how much b'cream to make the rule of thumb is one batch of icing using 2#s of sugar for each cake mix you use.  Since a 9x13x2 pan uses one batch of my *original* WASC recipe then you will need one 'straight from the box' recipe for the 2 6" rounds (plus a few cupcakes).  That means 2 batches of icing should be made which will give you enough for filling, icing and decorating the cake completely.

For supporting the upper tier you can use plastic drink straws - get the thick/fat onces like McD, and other fast food places have.  You will only need 2 or 3 because you will be cutting them down to the 4" heigth of the cake.

All you need is a straw in each corner of the upper tier.  If it's round, then use 3 placed in a triangle form.

whether you tort it (make into 4 1" layers) is purely a personal choice...but it will need more BC. I'm not a big fan of BC so if it were my cake I would use jam as a filling...again just my personal choice.

AHere's my attempt. I am nowhere near as talented as most of you, as I am a beginner. But, it was fun to try!

I don't say thing if I don't mean it. Now if you want to put real princesses in there you can purchase a decopak online or buy some of Disney's Prinesses. But to the best of my knowlege if you do that you cannot legally see it. Now that does not stop the mother form adding what she wants afterwards...

AI also agree that it looks alot better than the original pic. You should be extremely proud of yourself. It's awesome and your daughter will remember you made that for her in pictures and memory for the rest of her life. Take a bow momma for a job well done.
