AI have a bride who wants a cupcake tower (200 cupcakes) and a small cake on top. We are still discussing the details of the design and this is my very FIRST wedding client so I want everything to be perfect. I have two questions actually. One is I am thinking about purchasing the cupcake tower. It's expensive so I want to know if anyone has one and how the feel about it. Second question is if she decides on a fresh flower topper do I ask her to have her florist put it together? I don't want to buy the flowers and arrange them too. I understand that would be factored into the price but I honestly feel like I am nervous enough. I don't want to do the flowers, what would you all do?

AAs for the cupcake stand, I'm not sure, sorry. But the flowers.. I would contact the florist the bride is using and book a time for the 3 of you to meet, even via conference call, the florist can/will usually do it. Your bride just needs to say what she's wanting on the topper. If you do end up arranging the topper, make sure you charge for that as well, but as I said the florist usually does it and includes the fee with that bill.

Fresh flowers are the responsibility of the florist, however, I always insist that I am the one to put them on my cake.

The florist is ordering everything, so they will make sure the flowers all match, etc.

As far as a stand, I have 2 that I had custom made, they turned out about hte same price as one of the higher quality ones you can find online, but made exactly how I wanted.

One is acrylic and one is white wood, I do a ton of cupcakes so they get used a lot, and the rentals have more than paid for the stands.

As far as buying one for your first order, I would say that depends on your finances. If you have the extra cash and are confident you will be doing more large cupcake orders, go for it.

AWhile I don't have a ton of experience with fresh flowers I wanted to learn so I didn't have to rely on the florist. I bought Jennifer Dontz dvd video on flower arranging for cakes and it was incredibly useful. I recommend it if you think you might be doing a lot of fresh flower arranging.

AAwesome! I've worked with fresh flowers quite a bit, but never put them on cakes. I worked as an assistant to an event planner and needless to say, she would have me doing small easy arrangements so she could cut costs and have beautiful flowers without a florist. Not saying I'm some wonderful florist, but I can wrap floral wire around any flower and submerge it. I will check out that video!

AThank you for your responses. Ideally, I would like the florist to arrange it in a cake vase and I will actually place it on top of the cake. And I will most definitely be charging if I end up arranging it myself :). As for the stand, I looked into a custom one from smart baker which is a bit cheaper but unless I get something really high (like 6-7 tiers) it won't fit 200 cupcakes she's also thinking of a small cake on top as well and unless I put it on the floor (joke) she won't reach the top to cut the cake unless she takes it off. Oh I also didn't mention that the wedding is in 8 weeks! Most of the custom places I've seen take 6-8 weeks not including delivery. I've checked etsy, smart baker, eBay. Scrumdiddly, where did you order yours from? To be honest I really can't afford to buy one and can only hope I get more wedding orders but I only have the huge Wilton one and I think that's fine for a home or kids party but I think it might be a little cheesy for a wedding. I also don't want to disappoint the bride.

AI will also look into that video, thank you! If im lucky, ill find it at a nearby library. Prob slim chance but worth a try. Even if I don't do much arranging in the future I will learn something new. Can't hurt! Thank you

I made my own cupcake stand for about 30 dollars. Its cake drums glued to cake dummies in graduating sizes, then decorated with coordinating ribbon and sticky shelf paper to cover the cake dummies. That way, you can keep the stand and change it out to whatever colors you want in the future.

200 cupcakes is a lot, but don't forget that at least 2 dozen of those can be sitting on the table wrapping around the base of the stand. If you still need more room, you can flank the stand with a few single tiered cake stands filled with cupcakes, making the whole thing look like a cupcake display/ desert table. You can use a bowl turned upside down with matching plate on top, and no one will be the wiser.

this is the home made cupcake stand. I only have about 60-70 cupcakes here but you can use bigger cake drums.  you can use soup cans for the centers instead of cake dummies but make sure you use a large cake dummy on the bottom to support the whole thing.

AYes I made the wrappers with cheap paper doilies for the white ones and scrapbook paper for the black ones. There are free cupcake wrapper templates online , all you do is cut them to size and make a slit to connect the sides together or even a little glue dot or piece of tape

Where can I find the cupcake wrapper templates? What kind of paper do you use? I bet I could use my cricut machine and make wrappers that say names or short phrases, like "Mr & Mrs." My creative juices are flowing.

AJust google " cupcake wrapper template" , there will be sizes for jumbo, standard. & mini. I found a pack of doilies at Michael's and the scrapbook paper at Michael's as well. Test one on your cupcake first to see if its the right fit and height. You can tweak it a little by trimming it to how you want it and then use that one as the template for the rest of your wrappers.

AI am a Florist and dabble in cake decorating. Here are some things to consider with putting fresh flowers on top of a cake. One is the type of flowers, will it hold up in any heat. Fresh flowers need to be wired and taped on the day of the wedding. I will call the cake decorater and we discus delivery of the cake topper or she will pick it up. I need to keep in mind the reception will be a few hours later so the fresh flowers must still look pristine when the bride and groom cut the cake....nothing worse than wilted flowers in their professional photos. Fo my daughters wedding cake I did a mix of fresh orchids and gum paste roses. She was married in the Australian heat and high humidity, it was the gum paste roses I had problems with.
