Hi,

My son has requested a Red Arrows cake for his birthday ( he previously wanted a fighter jet but changed his mind).  We will be on holiday with my in-laws for his birthday, so need a design that I can prepare in advance as much as possible.

I was thinking I'd make several little Red Arrow planes and have them coming out of the cake on wires, in formation.  The cake will just be a simple round cake with blue fondant and white cloud cut outs.

Can anyone think up a way in which I can do the coloured "smoke" that comes out of the planes?  It's not essential, but would add such a better look to the cake.

Thanks!

Lizzie

AHi Lizzie

Wow that sounds like a fab cake, my husband would love it  he was at Fairford Airshow today watching them!

The only thing the immediately comes to mind is candy floss?! It would have to be light so it didn't weigh your little planes down? Although not sure how you'd make it 'trail' and not droop. If you were really careful you could maybe secure the floss to dry spaghetti sticks, so they were edible instead of using something like wire?

Good luck though, would love to see a pic when you are done :)

Candy floss is a good idea, thanks!  I could just shape it round the wires the planes are on and have them in a starburst formation (like this).  Any idea how to colour the candy floss?  I'd be buying but don't expect that it will come in blue or red.

AI'm pretty sure I have seen floss in blue, pink and almost white so you might be ok and not need to try colouring?

I'd try and pop into local sweet shops to see what they have, or failing that try fetes or fairs which are bound to have someone selling it?

So here's the cake:

A Red Arrows birthday cake for my son. We were on holiday so it's not as good as I'd hoped but he was happy with it. I had to use ribbon for the vapour trails as couldn't source any candy floss in the right colours. Modelling chocolate planes.

I couldn't get candy floss (except for £7 a tub from ebay which was far, far too expensive!), so I used ribbon instead.  It was very difficult to get it wrapped round the wires and held in position, so I would change the kind of ribbon I used for next time.  The wires were too thin and flopped rather with the weight of the planes.  The house was too hot and everything kept being attacked by flies as I was making it!  Not a particularly fun experience but my son was thrilled and had such good fun eating the planes :-)
