Congratulations on your first tiered cake! It was a little nerve-racking stacking the tiers, huh? What did you use for supports?
Slurpie straws and wilton bamboo dowels got them both at Wal-mart...
after I had stacked the layers of the first tear and frosted it I released just how un even it was, so I leaveled out the other 2 tears better then I leaveled the dowels in the first cake so the top 2 looked more even.
Yes it was nerve-racking especially since it was all butter cream and I didn't want to mess up my 3-5am piping that I did :)
but I wanted to make one and this gave me a reason to so it's all good
You mention leveling the dowels better. When you put dowels into a cake (be they straws, wood, plastic or whatever) you find what looks like the highest spot (actaully there should not be a high spot but often even w/good leveling tools there might be), put in one support and mesaure where it meets the cake & mark it. Remove and cut ALL others used in that tier the same size. What way it balances out the next tier.
That is basically what I did decided on what length they should be and cut them all the same height then I layed a cutting board on top and used a level like you would use in wood working, to make sure it was all the same height did the same with the middle, at first I fallowed the directions from Wilton's website and put them in the cake made a mark and cut there (I'm sure that is for when you have a level cake) but it seemed like it would be way off so went with my gut and cut them all the same length.
Here is a better picture taken with a different camera.
