My friend wants a bucket cake, however she does not want fondant. I need the butter cream bucket to look like wood but i do not have an air-brush. Could I use gel icing or is there another way???? Any suggestions are appreciated.

If I had to do a bucket cake and it couldn't be fondant, I would use poured chocolate (colored white chocolate? or light milk chocolate?) cut into boards and dried. Then painted or stenciled for the wood grain. Then when all dry, put the "boards" vertically around the buttercream-iced cake.

Or use an impression mat such as used in the first link here:

When I made this basket I used graham crackers dipped in dark chocolate and milk chocolate and then used the other color chocolate to make the wood grain (or you could use the wood grain tool from a hardware store). Please ignore the sorry-looking leaves in the photo!!  Maybe this will give you an idea

Leaves are cookies and tootsie rolls, bushel is made from the bottom half of the giant cupcake pan and the wood slats are different flavor chocolate covered graham crackers. Toasted coconut for dried grass. No fondant!
