AMy husbands cousin is going to be 17 and I have been asked to make him a simple cake for this weekend. The issue is I want to make it cooler than just simple and something that will make him feel special. The reason being is his mom ran off with some guy to another state a few months ago and he was just neglected and feels really unloved :( i asked what he likes and he said he didn't know not really anything and that his favorite color is orange. Hm... I need ideas! Some cool icing design or something that will say wow this isn't just a sloppy simple smooth buttercream cake. Anything?? TIA!

AI made this cake for a friend's daughter. If you omit the roses and put stars or polka dots on it might work.

if he is 17 he may like motorcycles. You could do a Harley Davidson theme using the orange

Sorry to hear about his unfortunate circumstance being so young too. :(  I did a cake a while ago before I started taking pictures and it was for a 16th birthday(boy)

It was smoothed buttercream(dark royal blue) with a rough cut crown(fondant in gold) and in bold letters it said KING 16 with small fondant diamonds(dark purple) around it... sorry no pic.... HTH Good Luck!

AOh, I just had an idea! You could use a ball pan and make a cake that looks like an orange! :D

AYou must know some of his interests, perhaps your husband will. I am also sorry to hear about the circumstances but it's super sweet that you want to make him something extra special. I'm sure he will appreciate anything you do! I tend to over think things like this, he's seventeen and a boy hmmmm I'm sure he has a favorite sports team (maybe the state he lives in, their sports team or local if he plays sports). You could make a cake with a collage of things he likes or things he's done over the years, awards he's won, music he likes, you could make a boy on top out of fondant/modeling choc and add cd's, a car, school books. There's so many ways you can go with this cake! In my experience all boys enjoy sports, Nintendo (I call them all Nintendo b/c I'm not that hip lol), computer games, music, cars...pick one or several!

AThank you for your suggestions!! I've decided to just carve a numbers cake-17 out of 2 quarter sheets.( pray for me). And then just do his name underneath in cupcakes. wish me luck!

That sounds very nice - I'm  sure he will appreciate it!  When i doubt I cover my cakes in M&M's - rainbow, solids, whatever design!  Who doesn't like an M&M?  If you're not sure how to cover the "17", maybe a candy coating might interest him!  Enjoy!
