AI just bought a 12 by 2 round cake pan and I was wonder if any of you lovely bakers can help me by telling me how many boxes of cake batter I need for my pan?
Wilton has a chart to show you how many cups of batter you'll need for different sizes.

I believe a boxed mix is about 4 1/2 cups.
AThe Wilton chart is a good place to start. Just beware that different brands of cake mix yield different amounts. Of course, egg size and using doctored recipes can change the volume made too. Will take a bit of trial a d error, but I do recommend writing down the amounts you are successful with.

The area of a 12" circle is just a little less than the area of 2 9" circles. If you have a recipe that works for you and makes 2 9" layers, the same recipe will make 1 12" layer that will be just a little taller (deeper).
