My plan is to retire in Ecuador and I have been researching it for 10 years. I have been looking into the availability of custom cakes there and am a member of quite a few expat groups. We were discussing cake pricing there and one of the ladies I have come to know is coming next month for her daughter's wedding in Norfolk. She ordered a grooms cake from me...a Washington Redskins football cake. She is going to paypal me the deposit tomorrow. I just got a kick out of that.

Everyone on the site says teh economy will not support custom cakes but I say BS (as have some of the other folks who have PM'd me. I have heard from many the bakery products there are awful. I know that a cake that is $1000 here will not bring that with the HUGE difference in the COL, but not everyone there is indigent. One of the ladies said to me "I bet some of those cakes on Cake Boss are a $1000!" Good to know they have good cable! lol Another expat baker piped in though and said she just sold a cake for a 2 year olds birthday for $100 and a wedding cake for $850 without the customer batting an eye. I am also told that the higher income locals have to have something if it is the newest or best thing..I won't need to make a living from it so it won't be a problem if I only get one order a month. I just don't want to quit baking!! And if my cakes don't sell for some reason there are many childrens homes and orphanages that would love to get a cake.
