I ordered some Pettinice fondant to make Jennifer Dontz' chocolate fondant recipe, when I opened the bag, it gave off a very strong chemical smell. I tasted a small amount and it tastes like chemicals. I went ahead and made the fondant recipe, but it didn't help the flavor at all. I still can't get the taste out of my mouth.

Is this normal for pettinice fondant or did I get a bad batch?

I usually make my own mmf, so maybe that's throwing my taste off?

maybe you have a bad batch or maybe it's just not to your tastes? Everyone is different- what they like etc.

I've used pettinice many times- I think it tastes much less fake or chemically than satin ice- and it doesn't smell bad to me either. Satin Ice- that stuff is gross- IMO.

But the pettinice is just too soft to use, I only use it as a  very last resort. I've made the j.dontz recipe too- was just so-so for me.

Just to update, it was a bad batch. I ordered from a different distributor and this batch has no weird chemical smell or taste. I actually like the taste, pretty mild and when mixed with the chocolate, it's good! :)

Thanks for the advice!

What distributor did you use? I much prefer Pettinice to Satin Ice, but don't know where to buy it wholesale or without having to pay shipping.

I still had to pay shipping, I don't buy huge quantities b/c I don't have super high volume. This last time I got it from fondant source. They've had the best deal on the 15lb buckets that I've seen so far.
