As far as the cherry's, no idea. I have a severe dislike for maraschino cherries. But you can definitely get the cake smooth. Hot spatulas always work for me. I have also used the Melvira method quite a few times. There is a tutorial on here.
You're welcome! Turned out good. It gets better and better with practice. People around here aren't big on fondant so I have had to learn to get my buttercream smooth to look like it. Glad we helped!
