So i have a wedding cake to do which i need to price up. They want a BIG amplifier. They want the bulk of it to be fake and then a box on top to be cake. It is too expensive for cake dummies. I would like to use wood to make a big box. What wood should i use for the fondant to stick to it? what is the best thing to use to make it stick?

I have never made anything fake this big and I am concerned about the icing staying on the vertical and slanted drops. It is also going to be white would the wood discolour the icing at all?

would plywood or MDF maybe be ok or could anyone suggest any alternative?

all my searches on the internet keep taking me to how to make a wood effect on icing.

you can use mdf.  i use it for my cake boards sometimes.  i wet it with water, but maybe edible glue would be stronger on the vertical pieces. the wood shouldn't discolour the icing if it is layered on thick enough about 3-4 millimetres. it should be fine.
