Hi, I had problems using the asda icing, and trying to get it to the right consistency. I now make my royal icing from scratch with just 1 egg white, sifted Icing sugar, and a little bit of lemon juice. I also found the following youtube video by Elaine Macgregor very helpful.
for the chantilly lace effect simply use buttercream, that will be a perfect consistency for you.
When piping cornelli lace, I prefer buttercream, too, because when the cake is cut it's the same consistency and doesn't "crack" off the surface.
