sculpting a car cake

I've been asked to do a groom's cake and they want a maroon corvette.  I have never made a sculpted cake.  The closest I've come is cut letters out of cake.  Any suggestions on construction(i.e. do I need to have it raised on the board to accommodate wheels, type of cake to use, etc.)  I'm thinking I would need a denser cake.  I did see a corvette cake pan on Etsy.

Hi.

Search the tutorials here on CC for some ideas.  There are some really great car cakes here

I made a Mini Cooper a while back - I'm not a big carver either and this was an early one!

I used a pound cake made in a large loaf pan as the basis for the carving, a pound cake is a nice dense cake to use,

I planned the size around the fact that i was using little RingDings covered in fondant for wheels.  Oh Hostess and Drakes,  I miss you so:(

Good luck!

i have done a mini cooper cake. i started with a 10x10" chocolate mud cake. make sure before you sculpt, have  printed copy of the car that you want to do. print a pic of each side and top. cut to use as a template. good luck!
