Outta my comfort zone here. Anyone with a 7 year old boy who could clue me in to a few suggestions?

Actually, I am a Wilton instructor, and a student asked (BEGINNER!), so simple is a key....

Gotta love them--- one class and they are ready to do a cake.... Oh, and not just the stars over the character cake either....lol.

Help? Thoughts?

AMy 7-year-old boy likes Skylanders, Xbox, nerf/airsoft guns, fishing, skateboarding. I'm not sure how those ideas would translate into a simple cake though but hopefully it'll give you an idea of what some boys like.

thanks... just looking for what's "new"... raised 4 sons, but "baby" will be 23 next week.... so I am "out" of it, for sure.

I am really at a loss.... and have no idea what she may think is "good". I tried the Disney "Cars" wilton character pan...."no".

I've recently made a few for boys around age - pirates are always good, or what about Sonic? Or Angry Birds is something all the kids play. Here are some I made hope they inspire something for you to make for the little boy.

What about dinosaurs?  It could be as simple or as complex as you want with them.

AMy 11yo and 14yo nephews love Minecraft, been playing that for a couple years now. Legos is another big one they both still play with. The oldest was super into Thomas the Train as a toddler up until about 10yo or so.

My baby was 7 last month and we went for a pirate theme - I made two cakes, one to take into school and the other for his party.  Both relatively simple and the treasure chest can be filled with bought sweets!

This is a link to a monster truck cake made for my nephew.  The cake in the photograph is a 12" square chocolate, with the "cake dome scraps" used to create the "jumps".   Your beginning student could make any shape or size of cake, and make the "jumps" out of cupcakes or scraps.    My nephew was 10 at the time the cake was made, and the "Monster Truck Mud Jam with cars getting crushed" was all his idea.  Kids LOVE toys on their cakes!    I made the black and white signs by printing, taping to cardstock, then toothpicks, then using a black Sharpie to make the black and white squares.

(For the parking lot, I just used an oversize cardboard cake board cut out of clean cardboard.  The birthday boy  let each of his party guests pick a car to keep as a party favor.)

Thanks Apti!!!! That's the idea..... something "boy" that is technically easy.Perfect! I think I can get my student to recreate that with her limited skills and still be super cute and fun for the kiddos....thumbs_up.gif

You and your student are most welcome!

I made that cake  7 months after my first Wilton course at Michael's.  (I took all 4 WM courses and loved them.)  The birthday boy (my nephew) was trying his darnedest to stump me with a very detailed cake design request.

When I brought out the cake at the park, I told him, "HA! I laugh at your detailed cake request!"
