Just For Fun, Price My Cake!

So I just did a wedding this past weekend for my best friend's sister and I'd really like to see if I adjusted my prices correctly after being overseas. I'm in the Atlanta, GA area and I updated my prices in my CakeBoss software for ingredients as well as increased my hourly wage for the area. This was a four tier, cascading sugar flower cake and a Atlanta Falcons themed groom's cake. The brides cake was a 14" round white cake w/bc, 8" square white cake w/ raspberry filling w/ bc, 6" round chocolate cake w/ chocolate bc and a 3.5" square (that I trimmed for a better look on top of the 6") for a keep sake, serving 122. The groom's cake was a double layer 9"x13" Red Velvet w/ CC serving 50. Both cakes were covered in fondant. My best friend received the family discount of 10% so his total was $702.62, however, the original price would have been $780.69, $606.99 for the brides and $173.70 for the grooms. How did I do? What would your price have been? Thanks!

AYou did a good job pricing (not to mention on the cakes themselves), we would have been around $200 for the sheet cake and in the $800 range for the tiered cake. Those flowers must have taken a long time.

Thanks Jason, the flowers were a pain, however, it gave me time to catch up on Cake Boss on youtube while I worked...lol. I really appreciate the feedback!
I don't sell my cakes either, so no input from me on pricing but both are very lovely cakes and your flowers are gorgeous!
Just wondering, how long did it take you to complete the flowers?
About 35 hours of cutting out, forming and dusting the flowers, leaves and butterflies. I also glazed the leaves.
AI am pretty new to the business, but I have sold a few tiered cakes. I think your pricing is very good. A lot of work in the flowers that are gorgeous. I would love to know ow you put them together to cascade them as I am not quite there yet. I have failed so many times at trying to do this. Would appreciate any advice ou could give. Thanks Brenda

Your pricing sounds reasonable for a metropolitan area with the exception of the sugar flowers. 35 hours? How many cakes could you make and sell in that time? What would your time and cost difference have been if you purchased the flowers pre-made and dusted or sprayed them to match the wedding colors?

Thanks! The flowers should have ran me about 20-25 but I was working on those between 33-36 weeks of pregnancy. So I know I was a bit slow. I haven't given in to buying flowers since I enjoy the crafting myself. Plus, I can't complain if they don't look right. I can just remake them as suppose to being stuck with a product I don't like.

As for the cascade, this was my first as well, so I just did what I thought would work after watching some youtube tutorials and from some previous class knowledge. Some of the flowers were made on toothpicks and others on paper cover wired. l placed them on the cake one by one until I achieved the look and balance of flowers I was aiming for. I think that alone took about an hour of me being indecisive...lol. It also helps that I sketched out the cake before hand too, so I knew what I wanted the cascade to look like. I really wanted it to "bloom" as it got to the base of the cake. I hope this helps. You can PM me for any more details if needed. Again, thanks so much!

FIRST< you have to consider where we all live. Prices in CA are alot higher then prices in Chicago, etc...
I would have priced similar to DeeDelightful, in that I'd break out the flower pricing from the cake. I don't do sugar flowers like the ones you did so I'd have purchased all of them, then colored them. $150.00 wouldn't cover the cost of buying the flowers, shipping and my time coloring them. I'd have needed $300. for the flowers, min..

Wow, thank you all so much for your input! It's good to know I'm not under selling myself or under cutting someone else. I know that prices vary from location, so to see the ranges help me for my populated area. I remember the "bad ol days" of working for peanuts because I thought I had to compete with Walmart. Never again!
