Hi all.  Making a 2 tiered cake for a bat-mitzvah and the top tier is going to have silver leaf metallic horizontal bands and the bottom tier is going to have hot pink polk dots in a modern pattern.  There will be a hot pink "dotted" letter E at the top of the cake.  I'd like to make the sizes more dramatic and less traditional.  Any suggestions?  I was thinking the bottom tier could be an 8" cake and the top could be 6" cake, stacking both of the tiers with more layers than 3 or 4...maybe 5?  I would love any suggestions as I don't want a silly, too tall cake but want it to be different.  thanks.

Maybe stack a round on a square?    Or a hex on a square...hex on a round....Change up the shapes.  

good idea but what sizes would you do?  im having more trouble eyeing what looks good in terms of size.  8" with 6" on top or 10" with 8" or 6" on top?  thanks for your help!

How many servings do they need?   That will determine pan sizes.

they aren't even planning on serving it!!!  i'm also making 100 cupcakes and the cake is just for candlelighting purposes!!!

I don't know what pan sizes you have to give you a combo.   I would take your pans out on the counter and play with different sizes/looks.   I do that all the time...and to make sure what is the top layer will fit on the bottom layer. 

I made a 6" hex on a 8" round last week...but only because I only have the one hexagonal tin and I like to use it as it's not such a common shape :)

thanks for the replies.  I think I like the 8" with the 6" too whether its all round or different shapes.  as i've said, i really am horrible with eyeing what looks better!!!  :)
