AOkay, I finished my first cake this morning and I know it's far from perfect. I have to work faster when smoothing out the fondant on the cake. But we all have to start somewhere, right?
I have no idea why I went with a bug theme - probably because Fondant used to "bug" me? Now, the worst part is, there is a major snowstorm going on and I can't eat the cake myself. Will it be okay to hold it until tomorrow and then deliver it to a friends house?
I added the link to the album on Facebook - I am not sure if that's okay :)

AThank you Jess. I know there are cracks in the fondant that covered the cake. I am not sure if my marshmallow fondant is the right considentcy - it's seems very soft
Your little buggies are so cute and I thin you did a fanastic first try on fondant. I can still remember my first fondant I did cowboys hats right off on my first try or a wedding.. and I used the marshmallow fondant..nice but you could see shortening spots..for wedings I always use fondarific..easy to use and always taste great and looks great. And I was up almost all night frosting the main cake...Now ten years later, my time is cut in half and the confidence is there to try any type of cake.
If this is one of your first cakes..my dear friend, you should have no worries.. This one is beautful.
You did a pretty good job on the buggies:) but I think you might want to work on getting your crumb coat smooth.. you can see that the fondant is not smooth which is probably due to the crumb coat. Take the time to get your crumb coat smooth and your fondant will come out smoother on your cakes. It took me a while to figure that out in the beginning. If you are having trouble getting it smooth.. throw it in the freezer for 15 minutes and then over it with a warm knife..it will help smooth out your buttercream.
You have talent. Now it is just a matter of practice, practice, practice until you make perfection!!
I really like your cake. You know your fondant covering is not perfect but that comes with practice. Your figurines however are really well done.
I think you did a terrific job! Do you have a fondant smoother? It really helps. Also, it helps if you smooth your icing very well, then roll your fondant a bit thicker. I agree the bugs are completely adorable!
AI didn't put it in the fridge because its Marshmallow Fondant and someone told me that putting Marshmallow Fondant in the fridge is a big NO NO
This is honestly your first cake? As in, you'd never even baked a simple single-layer sheet cake, simply frosted and served in-pan?
I've baked perhaps a dozen or so cakes, none of them this ambitious. Even if this is merely your first decorated cake, it's quite remarkable. If it's truly your first cake of any kind, it's amazing.
AOh I might should have put it this way - my first fondant decorated cake. I have baked many many cakes but never really decorated one with fondant
AThank you. My second cake was a smaller one decorated with Minions. It turned out a lot better
