I see many recipes call for adding syrup to a stacked cake but do most bakers do that? Is there certain times you should add syrup and times you don't?

i do it most all the time for a white/yellow type tier cake
i rarely use it for chocolate cake--they never seem to need it
but for family snack cakes no unless i over srsly bake
