hey all

i bought an sps system and haven't used it yet.. i still plan on using it for my next wedding cake, but i've also seen a lot of posts from those who swear by just using cut dowels, cardboard plates and one long sharpened dowel down the center.. how do you get that shapened dowel down through the plates? do you actually sharpened it with a knife?? like a wood widdler :) ?

I sharpen mine in pencil sharpener but you could, use a knife.   I just hammer in it.   If it is sharp enough it goes pretty easily thru the cake boards.

It'd be a good idea to confirm what you mean by "through the plates"?  You only use this method if you are using CARDBOARD cake boards and not anything plastic between the layers.  If it's not cardboard, it'll go very badly lol.

For sharpening the dowel, please be sure to use a sharpener that used only for cake dowels so avoid contamination by any substances that aren't food-safe.

HTH!

I got my sharpener at Home Depot. They have a larger opening than a regular sharpener. Sharpen it to a VERY sharp point and hammer it in. I will go thru cardboards easily. Do not try to use this if you are using SPS plastic plates!
