I am looking for a how to/ tutorial to make a cycling helmet cake.  Anyone has done one of these?  I would appreciate all help and tips. Here is a pic:

this is an easy sculpture

draw or print the front, side and back profile of the helmet

stack cakes and sculpt them according to the profiles

cut out the air holes a bit-- inch, inch & a half--

apply fondant poking it into the air holes

color & texture it--you can just blacken the inside of the air holes just like the photo shows

cycling helmets do not* sit all flush on a surface--

two ideas here to accomplish this:

1. you could fashion a foam bottom board to rise up exactly like that and stack the cake onto that
2. just stack the cake flush on the board-- then carefully sculpt/cut the cake pieces (where the helmet does not touch the boatrd) just on the sides not all the way across/through (like the real one) and replace the cut pieces so that you can then quickly work with fondanting the top part without it collapsing from the pressure applied up above

--then when the top is the way you want it remove the cut pieces of cake and snuck the fondant in there and

eventually it will be blackened to make the effect of it not sitting flush

and you can camouflage that it really is touching the board in there with the straps--

so a lot of the cake does sit flush

but those other areas are scooped out and replaced momentarily in order to do the fondanting on top --

then removed and fondanting is finished and later blackened for effect--straps providing camouflage

this was hard to explain and easy to do so if you have a question i wouldn't be surprised
