What I'd do with the cake box moocher is tell her sure, she can buy boards from you, here's the price list. Then  double the price that you paid for the boards, since you're now acting as her wholesaler, and that's what wholesalers do. Make sure to take your shipping costs into account and add those in too! And if she wants you to lug the boxes in to work then that will be an extra delivery charge. Just hand her a price list and tell her that's what it will be,and if she'd like to place an order you'll need at least a couple of weeks advance notice ini case you have to order more from your supplier.

i've sold boards and boxes to people in my area, but they were polite about it so I didn't give them the wholesale treatment. Rude people get the special surcharge.

This, exactly!

It has taken me a week to read this entire thread (as I wanted to ensure that I wouldn't post a duplicate pet peeve), but I absolutely detest when someone asks if I will "make a cake in lieu of a gift"....um....who said that I was going to give a gift?

pie hahaahahahaha  McMeanie hahahahahahaha y am i finding everything funny today? meme you dont have tell her where you buy your stuff. i have an acquaintance that does cakes from home too. she has been doing it much longer than myself and has way more orders than me but some how i crank out better looking cakes than her. she often asks for my advice and i give it to her. S he also asked me where i buy my containers...hmmm.........the economy in jamaica is bad the equivalent of us$53 is hard to come by so i sometimes bake a cake and cut it up and sell it for slices. that allows me to survive in between the few and far cake orders. did i tell her where i got my containers from? heck no! i'm already giving her advice and looking at the pictures that she posts on bbm of cakes she is working on and telling her how to correct flaws she has. anyway i'm saying this to show you that you can give people help but dont doubt yourself when your internal sensors tell you that its getting to be too much. you could however order extra and charge her for it noting that retail is far more expensive that wholesale. after you make a couple bucks off her she should get tired of the high prices and just do it herself

AI've been making my sister's kids cakes for a few years now, in lieu of a gift. Goodness knows we don't need more kid toys around. And her kids get ours' old toys, so I know exactly how much more junk they don't need. So it's worked out well. She always gets a cake that's worth more than I'd ever consider spending on a kid toy. Last year she decided a week beforehand that she would have my nephew's birthday party that coming weekend. Uh, okay. Except I have a wedding cake and a baby shower cake already on my schedule. I told her I could do some cupcakes in whatever flavor she and my nephew wanted. She said, " oh, I definitely do not want cupcakes. Those are just cheap." SERIOUSLY? I've actually been more than a bit resentful of the cake on lieu of gift arrangement ever since. This year maybe I'll just get her kids another plastic $15 toy.

LOL! Really? I would have to laugh at the sheer stupidity of this.

How did you handle it after that comment?

ACakefat Haha I know it's just stupid, after she said that the couple really had to convince her to tell me the color of the roses (THAT WERE ALSO GOING ON THE WEDDING CAKE!!!!) and also her daughter kept interrupting the conversation and even the couple had nothing to say. But this was the end result it turned out nice! (With the help of God lol!!!)

Most recently during a Wedding cake consultation, after asking for 3 tiers (all triple height too!), of 3 different flavours and extremely detailed asked.......

"why does it cost that much.........its just cake!!!!"

AKikiandkyle Actually yes cause when we were decorating the church for the wedding and setting up the cake she came in late with only 1 bucket off roses!!!! Every table had one rose on it. I use to wonder why almost nobody of church rented her for their wedding flowers but now I know why and I certainly also will not rent her for my wedding!

that's just weird. I would never hire a florist that wouldn't tell me the colors of the flowers. EVER! As a bride i would expect to dictate the color of the flowers, not let the florist decide. If the florist couldn't deliver what i wanted for my wedding day i wouldn't think twice about hiring someone else.

AI do get irritated by people assuming or requesting the cake in lieu if gift not understanding the worth.

Even worse, are those who insult me by offering something so cheap. I did a very detailed 2 tier for a relative who offered me $50. Really? That won't even cover the cake much less the decor.

AOh oh! The best was a neighbor. She found someone on Craigslist who offered to do a 3 tier for $150. She didn't like the examples of her work. Told me she loved my work then offered me the same $150. Really?!

I think this is a very valid topic. I am not into the cake business but I used to freelance as an assistant director and had people call me to reduce my per day remuneration. My standard reply to them would be... "call me when you can afford me"!!! Any business takes hard work, time & energy. There is nothing like 'its just cake' or 'how hard can it be'... Excuse me but if you think its not so difficult... DIY!!!!

AMine is: " Why are you so expensive? I get 5 cakes by the local grocery store for the price of one"

Then go buy your 5 cakes there! I work hard on the details, and good cake does not come cheap!

Just tell them that your cake is a Lamborghini and the grocery store cake is a Chevette.

I get super annoyed when I spend a month planning and sketching a cake design and then the customer asks me if I can do cupcakes and a sheetcake instead and then she tells me how much I should charge her!  I design cakes as a hobby (it's not my full-time job) and do it for FUN.  Cupcakes and sheetcakes are NOT fun!  Especially after I spent all that time (and got so excited) about the cake design.....tapedshut.gif

So youbare getting paid then? Better start treating it like a business then. No one spends months on something that they haven't been paid for. When and if you go full time, you can't take orders and do sketches on the assumption that someone will go thru it. You'll keep getting frustrated and burn out quick.
