ALady last night calls about a cake for reception/ bridal shower. After I tell price which includes a 4/6 inch she says customer- well I don't need a cake to eat just a pretty cake for the center piece. Me- well I'm sorry the price is based off servings and that is the smallest cake they make. Customer- well maybe ill just order cake for everyone to eat Me- thinking ya right you don't want to pay 120 but your somehow going to pay 275??? I quote price Customer- well I just need a cake for decoration I'm not sure what to do? Me- reminds her this is a quote for plain cakes Customer- well put some decorations on Me-laughs well you didn't give me a picture of what you want so I have No idea how to quote you? Obviously custom hand made flowers will cost more than simple piping Customer- oh (light clicks on) well you do such beautiful work and brides name doesn't even really like cake And we just need one for decoration Me- I understand cakes are expensive I can't afford my own cakes. Customer- oh sure I understand ... We just need to decide what we are going to do And your cake tasted so good we just need one for decoration.... Me- silence

Nope I'm not budging lady... Lol

I am so going to remember that line Kiki..lol I also should have asked if she checked the competition because I know she didn't she just wanted a free cake because she knows me. Not happening. Its also amazing to me she knew it was rude to just out ask for a free cake.  But somehow complimenting me a thousand times and hinting isn't as wrong. 8)

Lady calls the shop yesterday: Yes, I need a cake for my daughter's 30th birthday (proceeds to describe a general idea of what she wants) How much would that be?

Me: Well, I would have to see exactly what you want and work up a quote to determine the price. But just to give you a starting point, our cakes start at $3 per serving.

Her: Oh, so for 96 servings that would be about $290??

Me: Yes.

Her: Oh, that's too much. So and so bakery down the street has a starting price of $125 for 96 servings. There's no way what I want would be $290 from them, would it?

Me: I'm not sure, I don't know their pricing.

Her: Well, can you tell me another bakery in the area that could do it? (She apparently doesn't want a cake from the cheap bakery she just mentioned?)

Me: Not for less than what we charge.

Her: Oh.

Had a customer call 4pm this afternoon (Thursday here), I was out but she asked another staff member if we could make a pair of 3D cowboy boots, chocolate cake, Ganache and fondant finish for this Saturday.  We are already booked out for this weekend so the staff member told her we would not be able to accept her order.  Customer asked the staff member to have me call her when I got back and talk her through how to make it as she knew she had left it too late and couldn't find anyone to make the cake, and she thought she would have a go at making it herself.  Geez I was so busy just didn't get time to return that call.

"Well it can't be THAT difficult, it's just a cake" ...if it's not THAT difficult or time consuming, then maybe you should try it

OR another one that drives me crazy "I don't really care about a cake at my wedding, its so not important" ...then why are you nitpicking EVERY SINGLE detail.

LOL! Nice. I just love how she expects me to send her to someone cheaper, like I'm her best buddy and I want nothing more than to find her the cheapest option possible.

Well, gosh, I wonder why you didn't just clear your schedule and devote your entire afternoon to talking her through it!

RIGHT?!? Nothing is more obnoxious than a bride who sits down with a custom cake artist and tells them their work isn't important to them. Then why are you HERE?!?

Seriously!

Ok even before I had a business I didn't treat people this way. I'm starting to have doubts about the human race. My husband and I talked about this the other day. Sadly he believes the vast majority of people are like the above. Everyone is such takers.

I made him offer his friend money for something he offered to give him. He was like "why he won't take it" I said I know but it sends the message you appreciate the offer and you don't use your friends. He can accept or not. I have met too many friends that just take things for granted and then keep asking what can you do for me.

Please tell me I'm right and the ratio of selfish people is not 90% lol

I gave up several "best friends". One in particular I laid her hardwood floors, installed her outdoor lighting, took her to doc appts, stayed with her when she recovered from surgery, took care of her 18 special needs son while she went to Cancun AND set up for her Superbowl party since she wasn't getting back until the night before. This is just a minor list...but whenever I had the smallest request she was busy or something else. Funny thing is the final straw is when she didn't show up to a party I was having...lol.

This thread is just TOO FUNNY, taken me 3 days to get through it but its my fave read!!

I hate when people say to me 'its just cake' or when they tell me that i'm icing my cakes wrong ... REALLY??? okay then you come ice them!

My mum and husband are sometimes my biggest critics, when i told them i was starting a business they just bashed me and told me i wasnt good enough ( really broke my heart that did, i almost gave up) BUT people DID buy my cakes, people love them and now my husband is on board he even takes care of the technical side of things and does my deliveries but my mum still expects me to be as good as the bakers at chocciewokiedoodah even though ive only been baking for a few years (simple designs only just branching out into fondant etc) she really gets on my nerves.

Friends who expect cakes for free even when they ask a price, you tell them and they agree to the order when you deliver the cake to the party they ignore you and dont pay you. NO MORE CAKE FOR YOU!!!

AI made a cake for my cousin's graduation. It was the first one I ever really decorated, everyone thought it was beautiful. My sister-in-law was asked what she thought about it, she said it looks "alright" and wouldn't even eat it! 0

This isn't cake related, but baking related. I was working a farmer's market yesterday, and a lady came up to the booth looking at the gluten free stuff. She asked, "Is this wheat free?"

I said, "It's gluten free, so yes, everything is wheat free. Wheat is where gluten comes from."

She looks at me like I just landed in a UFO, and said, "But is it wheat free?"

Me -"Yes."

Her - "Because I know you can add gluten to stuff anyway. But this is all wheat free?"

I just stood there, with no words.

Hahahaha! That reminds me of how companies put labels on stuff that couldn't possibly contain cholesterol (like a popsicle) and bragging that's it's cholesterol free. And I always thought that was so stupid. Apparently it's not.

AThis thread is hilarious!

My biggest peeve is when people ask for pricing. When I ask what they want, size, flavor, decoration and they say "oh I don't know. Just give me an estimate." Sweetie, I have no idea what to tell you.My cakes can start as little as $15 all the way up to several hundred. I went around and around with one person several times because she just kept asking for pricing but wouldn't give me any idea of what she wanted.

Or the time I had to turn down a customer because I had a wedding and baby shower the same day and they had both booked weeks in advance. Because of the size of the cakes and wanting to spend whatever time I needed on the wedding cake, I turned her down when she ordered for that day a week before. She sent me a message saying "so you are only capable of doing one or two cakes a day? Is it really that difficult?" Wow.

What do you sell for $15?
