That's our society...it starts in school. Everybody gets a trophy just for participating then the govt fosters it as they grow. I must point out that there is a big difference between legitimate entitlements and entitlement mentalities, all extremism, left or right, stems from the latter.

But let's talk about cakes.

she want me to bake 50 cupcakes.. then she will give the money equivalent to the cost of the ingredients. Then, my professional fee or labor or baker's fee would  be paid later when she have the money. that would be a month or so. I don't find it a good deal? do you think I can take the order and collect 50% instead then the other 50% would be payable after a month? :)

no...you take50% when the order is placed the the other 50% at pick up. You don't want to get the reputation as a pushover. No regular business would do that. You have to operate as a real business or no one will take you seriously. You don't need customers like that. Ask her if she would work to be paid whenever her boss "comes up with the money"? HECK NO!!

Well, they'll take the one for 16 people, but they only have 4 people coming, so they'll only need to pay you for 4 servings. Same for the cupcakes.

8O :-o :duh:

I'd just tell them "ok", but it will be $$$$ (my choice) for the class, depending on the season, and they would have to supply their own cookies and decorating materials. I would be "very happy to supply a supplies list")!! And I would pick the day(s) for the class. No problem!

I would be happy to send cupcakes to everyone, for whatever the going rate is ;-) What does Magnolia do them for?  for 6 for 24? Plus $45 for shipping? I would sell 6 cupcakes for $70 all day, lol!

Aw, don't worry about it. He was just clued in by you. Probably did him a favor.

He is the new boyfriend of a longstanding client who is recently divorced, and the cake is for her, so I guess he doesn't want to look like a cheap skate, lol.

Was just discussing this same thing literally seconds ago with a dear friend. Specifically discussing my 26 yo renter and how I don't think  she knows she is rude...but this is a cake site and I will keep my opinions about the degradation of civilized society to my FB page where no one listens to me either! lol

Actually, I have worked to be paid when my boss came up with the money. Of course, when I did so, I was working a video crew for my best friend. And on other occasions, again working video crews for my best friend, I've refused any pay, both for cases in which his financial hardship was extreme, and for cases when I felt that my job performance failed to measure up to my own standards. (And I spend most of my Saturdays docenting at the International Printing Museum, in Carson, CA, for nothing more than getting unfettered access to graphic arts equipment for personal projects.

But those are cases in which I'm working for my best friend, or I chose, on my own initiative, to become a museum docent.

I wouldn't even do that. My orders have to be paid in full at least three weeks before for wedding cakes. For smaller things I still make them pay in advance. I find that when people pay anything at delivery they tend to forget to pick things up, and I end up stuck with something I don't need. If you order custom furniture they make you pay in full when the order is placed, so why should we be different? custom anything makes it pretty much impossible to transfer that specific item to someone else, so pay in advance or you don't get it.

You guys ROCK!  I was just happy to find a website with other people who bake, and learn from them.  There is no one in this small town that I know who bakes the way I do. To read your comments is inspiring and hopeful, and a very nice bonus discovery.

My experience with the young employees was unbearable and disturbing. I'd be working non-stop for hours and they'd be visiting in the break rooms: because they were all entitled to a free easy paycheck.

I have sworn to always bake as a hobby, and never ever as a job.  Too many people with Champagne taste and Kool-Aid pocket books, and bad attitudes to boot.

The unfortunate thing about young ones with a sense of entitlement is that they were brought up that way by their parents.  Usually too spoilt and never having to wait or go without un-necessities.

AThat has been my experience too. I've also met and worked with many of said parents, thinking the world owes you a living isn't restricted to young people.
