I'm pretty new to this and am wondering how you measure so that things like piping drapes come out even.
How do I measure?

Here is one video showing how one person does it below. Everyone has their own methods for doing this. She is piping dots. You don't have to do dots but can pipe with any tip you want for the garland around the cake. She eyeballs it and separates the cake by putting small dots all around the top cake into 4rths. Then she uses top cake as a guide to mark the two bottom bigger layers.
She ends up measuring by her thumb all the way around the cake for how long down to put her swags around the cake.
I also bought a pink garland marker that fits 8 -9 inch cakes or 10 inch cakes from sweetartfactory.com I wait until my frosting crusts before putting my garland
marker around the sides of the cake. It makes very small marks all the way around the cake then I pipe with whatever tip I want.
I guess everyone does their own thing. I am sure you will get lots of ideas from most of the experts on this site that do this for a living. I am an amateur and and hope that others will pitch in here so I can learn even more techniques. Good luck/Mary
