I just did a wedding cake this weekend for the sweetest lady.
We had great communication. I asked about her florist and gave instructions to pass on so that the picture that she brought in could be duplicated.
Her top tier was an 8 inch. That is bigger than the traditional six inch. Gave insturctions that she needed to let the florist know that the arrangement of flowers would need to be bigger so it wouldn't look dinky on the bigger tier.
I was confidently going along Sunday morning,piping with a #1 tip, when fear hit me.
I suddenly just knew that there wasn't going to be a flower arrangement for the top.
The florist was going to bring a bucket of flowers instead.
I grabbed the scraps that I'd made when I leveled the tiers and carved a half ball on a six inch cardboard. I rough iced and brought it along.
You guessed it.
She came up to me with a cup full of white roses and hydrangea ...no arrangement.
I asked how she wanted to decorate and she said she wanted to just 'lay' the flowers on top.
Smiled and said that I have a better idea.
We just set that little scrap cake on there and poked all the flowers in it. Gave the cake a nice height.
The MOB surprised us with a couple of white owls to put on it, too.
Sliced a bit off the top and used toothpicks to balance them.
With out the emergency cake it would have been a flat, sad thing.
Turns out the florist was also a guest as the wedding.
I loved that because she knew that I intended for that 'flower tier' to be tossed and not served.
My daughter told me that this delivery was the calmest she'd ever seen me at a wedding.
Makes all the difference when you predict that others may not be on board with the plan and bring solutions for just in case.
