Hi All,
New to Cake Central and I thought why not make my first post a disaster post!
I just finished a cake last night for a breast cancer bake sale for the firm I work at. It will be the cake being auctioned off. I am not a pro but a hobbie baker and I've made cakes before with major success so I thought..why not.
Well of course the cake i make for auction is the one that bombs the worst. I made a delicious, dense butter cake, torted it into 3 layers and the cake itself is delicious. Covered it in a super yummy buttercream. In terms of taste, the cake has it. But then...I began decorating.
It is currently at 88-100% humidity in Toronto and it made fondant a nightmare. First, it was sticky, then it was too dry, then it was too soft again. I finally got it manageable and laid it on the cake. Mere seconds later, it began to crack, it wouldn't smooth down, it was just not agreeing with me. I finally got it looking semi decent with some handy decorating and a bit of Crisco...THEN i woke up this morning and the entire bottom had buldged out. Too much icing, too much heat even in the coolest room in the house, and the little ribbons I had hand cut had dropped to look very cracked and very sad. All in all, it is a sad looking cake.
Lets hope I get some bids on this thing! I'm so nervous. I'll try and attach a photo here, otherwise I'l post a pic in my gallery.
Just wanted to vent. I'm not using fondant again until the dead of winter....when it still manages to be humid in this darn city!
The cake looks good... I know how it feels when you are hoping for the best and then it conks out on you. Am sure you will get bids on that cake.
We are our own worst critics. The cake is nice and will surely sale. My mother died of breast cancer and it is great you took time from your busy schedule to do this. It made me hungry reading about it. Good Luck and Thanks!
Oh my you think that is a cake disaster. You are crazy it may have a few hiccups but definitely not a disaster. You can always put your fondant cakes in the fridge. When you pull it out and it comes to room temp it will get condensation don't touch it or you will have fingerprints. Just let it dry and it will be fine. Good luck at the auction you will get bids no problem. Make sure to come back and tell us how it goes.
Thank you all for the positive feedback and encouragement! The bakesale has begun, I'm going to nervously walk over to check out the silent auction sheet now!
Happy to report that, despite some MAJOR sagging under the lights in the boardroom, the cake netted 300 dollars! I had set the starting bid at 50 bucks so I'm so happy with how things turned out and the amount of money it raised for our team.
I don't think this is a cake disaster at all. I'm certain it will get bids. Great cake and very admirable of you for making for a worthy cause. God bless you!
