Has anyone else ever been asked to make a funeral cake? I'm working on it tonight, trying really hard to make it tasteful. This is one I've never done before. Maybe I should call it a "celebration of life" cake.

My parents had a catered dinner after a parent's funeral. The cake was a simple sheet cake with multicoloured shell borders from pastel icings striped in the pastry bag. That was all. Nobody complained.

Just keep it simple. Nice flowers and a simple shell border are always tasteful. If you know the decedent's favorite color you can incorporate that somehow.

I remember reading this as a topic once before and the kinds of things suggested, including an edible image of the departed. I agree with the above, keeping it simple.

My father passed away in July, He was my best cake taster (he'd be standing outside if I said I was coming over with something) and I made this stack of pancakes for him just this Father's Day because the man loved pancakes! But when it came time for the funeral it was no time for any of that. It was all about comfort food, food that made people feel a tiny bit better and even foods my Dad loved. So I made peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies piled on a giant heart cake plate.

Good luck.

I did one for our church (they call people to donate items for a funeral dinner). I made a square cake with just white butter cream and a piped border. I did put the diamond impression mat on the side just so it would break it up a bit and put fondant praying hands on top. It was real simple, but I felt like I helped the family feel a little better.

I did one for a family friends funeral. Very simple. The family loved it. In my photos.

I have created one also. I was asked to use a sheet cake and make it garden themed since she had been an avid gardener. It was white buttercream with pastel roses and a single tiny butterfly to represent resurrection into a new life. These things are of course very personal, simple is better.

I have done several different types of funeral cakes. I have done NO color, only white sheet cakes, scored and a piped border.

I have done themed sheet cakes based on interests of the deceased, not over the top, but tasteful and usually simple.

I have also done stacked sheet cakes of different kinds of cake, specialty flavors, but no decorating. Kind of like the back of the house cakes I do for weddings. The cut slice is like a wedding cake, layers of cake and filling, but the tops are scored to make cutting easier.

It all depends on what the family wants, somber, colorless or more up-beat.

Heck for my "funeral" "memorial" I want color, laughter, and really GREAT cake!!!!!
