Please chime in with your opinion on this cake in progress. I have a cut out fondant spider that was meant to be put on the bottom tier of this cake, right under Spiderman's head. Now I don't think it need it. I also have an approximately 3" high red gumpaste "5" that will be standing on top of the cake that I'll put on in the morning. So, what do you think, yes to the spider or no?

Perhaps you could put the spider on the right side to cover up the one piece of stringwork that's hanging lower than all the others.

I didn't notice the lower piece of stringwork immediately buy my first thought was to place the spider (if it's large enough) on the board near the bottom tier. The stringwork is easy to fix if it's fondant.

Maybe you could put the spider on the number itself, tying it into the design further.

Thanks, everyone. I guess I wasn't clear in describing the spider. It's a flat cutout of the stylized spider that appears sometimes as a Spiderman logo and that's on the chest of his costume. It's almost 4" high and 3" wide. I've decided to go with my first instict and leave it off. I'll fix the web, though. I hadn't noticed that either.

Ugh. My 5 was too heavy and wouldn't stay standing. I ended up using the spider to cover the toothpick holes it left behind. I put the 5 on the front of the cake. I decided against fixing the stringwork. The issue with the topper frazzled me too much. I doubt if the recipient will notice and it is a web, after all, and webs droop sometimes. Of course, now that's ALL I can see!

Coming in late on the spider thing. In fact this isn't about the spider, it's about your 5. Is it that you held it up with a toothpick? If so, that won't work (as you noticed) I use 2 skewers. This way there's support through most of the figure AND 2 'legs' holding it in position.

This is a brilliant cake! What 5 year-old wouldn't freak out about it?
Heck, I'd love this as a birthday cake and I'm a *bit* older than 5...
