I am making a wedding cake for a friend in August and I am in the process of making 100 hydrangeas (thank you Jacquelyn Butler). I am about 40 pieces in and I just realized I have no good way to store them safely - I have two cats, two dogs, a 4 year old boy who likes to make cakes with me.

I was thinking of storing them in a 9 x 24 Sterile container but should I go find some foam, bubble wrap, etc to cushion them?

I have no plans on dusting them until a few days before the wedding while the cakes are baking so I don't have to worry about transferring of dust colors.

I'd suggest cardboard cake boxes.

You can store them in a light box. Just a cupboard that has a bulb in it. The gum paste flowers last a month in there with the light on. No melting or flowers turning mouldy etc. I learned this technique from a sugar flowers teacher two yrs ago. She also keeps her sugar flowers in her oven with the oven light on but I guess your flowers would have to be pulled out and put back in several times to bake.

there really isn't a need to do this unless you live in a *very* humid place. I don't know what area/type of climit this person lives in but most of us here in the US would not need to do that. As others mentioned, just keep them in a cardboard box should be fine.

I see nothing wrong with this plan. It wouldn't hurt to use some thin foam or bubble wrap as a cushion....especially if the box is deep and you want to stack them in layers.

I have tons of gumpaste flowers in boxes in my office all the time. There's no need to worry about them...Remember that we tell people they last for years of you keep them out of humidity and dust, so just put them in a non-airtight box and don't worry about them. I line the bottom of the box with bubble wrap if they're really fragile, but with hydrangeas that will be in clusters a broken petal or two isn't a big deal, they butt up against each other and it isn't very obvious if one is broken.

I live on the East Coast of Canada and at any given time it can be beyond humid or really dry in the summer.

Right now the humidity is just right for for gum paste - completely dry in 3 hours. I plan on leaving them out over night to be 100% on the dry aspect.

Don't know if you'll need to worry about this but I had a problem with it. I live in a house with an air conditioner. I made flowers for my Aunts renewell cake and transported them to my mothers south from me and actually baked and decorated the cake there. When I went to take my flowers out and use them they had softened up. Hadn't thought about it but my parents have a swamp cooler instead of air conditioning and it put a lot of moisture in the air. Thank goodness I made extra flowers, there were a few casualties.
