Thank you all for the tips. I wonder why I was never notified of any replies, or I would have responded sooner. I don't want it to seem as if I was ignoring the many replies.

I will definitely look up the Cakeman's recipe. I don't normally like to tweak recipe's but I did have the thought to use oil along with the butter and/or an extra egg so I was glad to see both of these thoughts mentioned.

Red Velvet I think is the only recipe that my dear mother didn't make. I think I had my first slice when I moved to Georgia many many years ago and it hasn't historically been my favorite cake, but my friends increasingly request it.

A wash is the proper term for simple syrup brushed or applied to the cake after baking.
