Hi all,

I have been asked to make a police badge-shaped cake for an officer who is graduating from the academy next week. The badge is silver so I have been looking for techniques for creating a silver finish on a buttercream frosted cake. I don't have an airbrush system, so my search brought me to the Wilton site and their "silver color spray." It seems to be just what I am looking for but I am a little wary about a few things: it is supposed to be 80 degrees the day the cake is due, WILL THE COLOR RUN?? Does the spray cover well? Are there any weird flavors?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I just used it yesterday on a banana split cake I made for Father's Day. I thought it covered very well, and did not run at all. I tasted just some of the buttercream by itself on my piece, and there was no funny taste or after-taste, which I was worried about. I can't speak about whether it will run in the heat as it was only in the low 70's here yesterday.

I don't buy the commercial sprays I make them myself. I have a small (100ml) atomiser spray bottle, I put in some alcohol (95%), and add some silver (or whatever colour) powder, shake it up and spray away!! Because of the 95% alcohol it dries to touch (if you get overspray on your bench you can touch it and its is completely dry and doesn't smudge or anything). Does not run, it is a great airbrush system for small jobs.

I realize that it's probably too late for this, but I used the Wilton silver spray on white fondant that I used to make a beer bottle cap cake for my son's birthday. It covered great and held up fine without any aftertaste.
