I have an unopened tub of Duff fondant that I bought exactly a year ago. Can I use it, or should I pitch it?
Not that it makes a difference, but it's for a Father's Day cake for my hubby, so it's not leaving the house (but I of course still want it to be good).
TIA!
I have had several different brands of fondant as well as my recipe made batches and never had them go bad.
Fondant is made with sugar which acts as a preservative. It should last. Just the same to put your mind at ease, look for an expiration date.
Thanks. Yes, the first thing I did was search the tub for a date, but I don't see one. There's a sticker with some kind of code on the bottom of the tub, but I couldn't translate that to a date.
I truly think your fondant should be fine. I have had unopen Satin Ice before and it was fine. hth
I have a few tubs (different brands) I was looking at today because I know I've had them for a while and some have an expiry date and some don't! Not sure what to do...I really don't want to throw the ones out without any dates on them, but I'm afraid to use them. Is there any way of knowing if they are ok?
From what I read unopened fondant has 2 year shelf life .
And if they are opened?? I have a few small tubs that I bought of pre-mixed colors...like green & red for Christmas....and black from Halloween. I've only used a bit out of them, but there is no expiry date on them.
@dandymom....They haven't gone hard....I can knead them with no problem. But are they food safe....that is the question. I think that is what the OP is asking.
I'd call a local supply store or the company themselves. I remember I had the same question once & they were able to translate the numbers on the package as a code for the date. Good luck! I hate when it is not dated because I am always worried about things going bad :0/
Aha! My initial search on the Duff website was unsuccessful, but with further digging I found my answer in the FAQ section. It says that Duff fondant has a shelf life of 21 months. I don't know how old mine was when I bought it, but I've had it for 12 months, so I'm going to go ahead and use it. Thanks, everyone!

Great!! Now I've just sent an e-mail off to Satin Ice to see what their recommendations are also. When saying "shelf life" I want to confirm if that also applies to product that has been opened. I will post if and when I hear back from them also.
