Advice for a open treasure chest cake

I am going to attempt to make a open treasure chest cake. One that looks something like this.

Hopefully the link works. I've never done that before..
I am thinking I'll make the top part of the chest out of rice crispies to make it a little bit lighter. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the chest look open? I'm guessing dowels placed somewhere? And would I need to worry about the top part of the cake sliding off the back...if that makes sense how I'm describing it;o) Thanks for any advice.

Nice looking cake, should be fun to make.
I've done the open treasure chest twice. (they are in my gallery)
Yes, I used RCT to make the lid lighter.
Mounted it to a cake board cut smaller than it and used melted chocolate to make sure it stayed put since it would be at a slight angle.
I've used dowels to support the lid. the front set taller than the back set.
I usually put the lid on the cake at the site.
I think that if you make a hole or notch in the cardboard where the dowels will make on contact and use some melted chocolate to 'glue' it, that you should have an issue with slipping.

Looking at you picture (neat cake) I would use well placed dowels because they would be hidden by the coins. The chest really isn't open that far but you could use a couple of skewers in the finished lid and sink them into the cake if you are concerned with it slipping. I did a cigar box with an open lid (in my pics) but I had to travel with it 61/2 hours so my support system was much different. Hope this helps a little.

Isn't it a neat cake? I know mine won't look that great but it's ok...I think it will be a fun one to make. Thank you both so much! You've really helped me! Do you think I should decorate the top first and then put it on the bottom or put it on and then decorate it?

mommachris might know better as she has made a chest before but after you have your cakes stacked and your lid made from RKT, I would cover both with the wood fondant and then put all the strapping on. Make sure the lock lines up on the top and bottom. You can then put the lid aside and work on the placement of the coins and jewels. I would put the lid on when you got to where you are going with the cake. Hope that helps a little.
