Wood Grain Cake Board affect with a fondant board

Thread Starter
How do I attempt a wood grain affect on a cake board covered in fondant??? Do I let it dry completely? Then use the wood grain tool? Would I do a 50/50 fondant gumpaste mix?

Any help would be wonderful thumbs_up.gif

I am going to do a replica of Sharon Zambito's book cake.

Thanks,

Cover the board with fondant, then make whatever markings you want (some use a knife, some use the wood grain tool, it just depends.) Let dry then paint with diluted gel colors to look like wood. Easy peasy! icon_biggrin.gif

I agree with Bob but I do let my fondant firm up slightly before using my faux graining tool (Martha Stewart brand @ Home Depot). Otherwise it can tear the soft fondant.

I made a fondant covered board look like the floor in Andy's room for my Toy Story cake by colouring the fondant a light brown and then marbling in two shades of brown - Americolor Chocolate Brown and Americolor Warm Brown. I rolled it out and when it was on the board I used my ribbon cutter tool at about a 1.5-2" spacing and rolled it down the board to create floor boards. It was the first time I'd done it and I was thrilled with the results. My MIL thought it was really wood. icon_smile.gif
