Well, I finally did it. I was making buttercream icing and my mixer started smoking. icon_cry.gif This would happen in the middle of the busiest week I have ever had. Not that I have been doing this for years.

I have a wedding cake for Wed. (yes Wednesday, I guess they did that to get a cheaper location price), 2 B-Day cakes for Fri, and 2 B-Day cakes for Sat.

My husband told me to just go out and get a KA. Are they really that much better than other brands? Does anybody have a Sunbeam mixer?

Thanks,
Angela

i would agree that kitchen aid is the best....however i can not afford one. i bought a G.E. from walmart and it is awsome! and was just under $100.00 works great for me, and i do a fair amount of cakes and other deserts.
just my 2cents

I had a Sunbeam before I got my KA and it worked perfectly. The advantage is KA is all the accessories and kits. You can buy a pasta roller and ice cream maker just for the KA. The only accessory Sunbeam had was a cover. Plust you can get a KA in a million colors and pretty cheap right now from Amazon.

I LOVE my KA. I actually have 2. I have a larger 6 quart and then a smaller one. I actually use the smaller one more than the big one. The reason is because a 2pound mix of BC seems like nothing in the larger mixer. You wont regret a KA purchase.

Yep....I swear by KA. I have both the 4qt and 6qt on my counters and use them both all the time...never a minute of problems with either one. I am asking Santa for a 10qt or 12 qt mixer for Christmas..although I don't know if KA makes that size or not!! I may need to switch to another manufacturer...yikes!!

I have an "older" KA...have had it about 20 years..was a smaller one..bought a brand new 5 qt and use my old stand by more than the new one.

I just am not convinced that the newer KA are as good as the ones "they used to make"...it just does not seem to run as smoothly as my older one..maybe it is just me.

I had a Sunbeam. My mom's still has it. Nothing compares to my KA. It's a Professional 6. I'd never go without one again. Ever! If you're hubby is telling you to buy one and you have a wedding cake due, what are you waiting for? : )

Only have 3 things to say............KA KA KA It will be the last mixer you will ever need to buy. No more worries about it burning up in the middle of a cake project. I have had mine a little over a year and use it to make a double batch of bc........whips it up in no time. No sweat.

My husband got me my KA about a month ago. I just love it, but I have a question...do ya'll use the KA to mix up a cake mix or just for frosting? I still use my hand held to mix the cake mix, and that's kinda making my husband think twice about the KA. (well actually he says under his breath...hmmm I didn't think you would use the KA very much)

I have a Sumbeam mixer and it works pretty well. I'm waiting for it to die so I can buy a KA. I've heard only goods things about it. I know the price tag might be a little on the high side but look at it this way .................. it'll last a long time so it'll be more than worth it in the end. But if you're not willing to spend so much I'm sure there are plenty of other brands out there that will do a good job also.

I'm with you all. Definitely invest in a KA if you can. My husband got me one for Christmas our first year together and I love it. I use it for everything, even mashed potatoes. They can be pricey, but they are worth every cent! You'll be glad you did.

Just a note that if you do decide to buy a KA, get it at a bed bath and beyond store. If for some reason you do have a problem you can just return it to the store and they will give you a new one, even if you used itfor a year.

Well, I did it! I bought a KA and I LOVE it! icon_biggrin.gif That thing goes though buttercream icing like it's nothing. I wish I would have bought it sooner.

I do have one question, though. The whisk does not go down far enough in the bowl to get some of the cake mix. I have to stop mixing and use a spatula to get it off the bottom of the bowl. Then turn the mixer back on. Does anyone else have this problem?

angelcake....i don't have a KA but i remember reading that there is a screw behind the bowl on the stand that you can turn to adjust the height of the bowl. hth...others will probably know better than me.
