So I did a wedding yesterday for a bride...she wanted a bridal cake and a groom's cake in the shape of a turtle. She called today to say that she was disappointed that the groom's cake was so big. We did 100 servings in the bridal cake - and made up the rest in a groom's cake ~40 servings, though it was closer to 50 servings. Anyhow, has anyone heard of anyone complaining that a groom's cake was too big??? Sigh...I should have known when she fired her planner a week before her wedding and she had her brother call me the night before her wedding...

thanks for listening!

Welll.........I assume that she knew ahead of time how the servings would break down between the 2 cakes and that she paid appropriately for her 140-150 servings?

If that's the case, then she doesn't have a legitimate complaint about anything and she most certainly doesn't deserve any $, or freebies, or future discounts, etc.

I'd politely tell her that you understand how it can be hard to envision how large a 40-50 serving CARVED cake may be when completed and that you're so HAPPY she had more than enough cake---your loss, her gain. Ask her to please tell her friends............LOL!

Good answer. I am going to email her...and want to politely respond. Yes, she knew the breakdown...we have over 50 emails back and forth with pictures, sizes,...a contract and an invoice with everything detailed. Sometimes, you just can't win...

True, and we seem to be in the era of drama mama's who never heard the saying, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
They just have to come up with a complaint or they feel that they haven't done their job........................gawd, it's tiresome.
And "Thank you" seems to headed for the extinct phrases dictionary.............

I wonder if the groom knows what he has gotten himself into... icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Thank you for your phone call yesterday. Again, I am saddened to hear that you were upset by the size of the groom's cake. I did go over all of our emails to make certain that their was no misunderstanding on my part. We did discuss doing a cake to serve 100 guests. As you can see by the Wilton serving chart (which is industry standard), a 6, 9 and 12 serves 100 guests. I did speak with your brother prior to the wedding and offered a cake stand for rental if you were interested in having it elevated.
WEDDING CHART HERE

As discussed prior to your wedding, scale plays a major role in sculpted cakes, since in most cases, the size of cake that a client envisions usually serves far more people than they need to feed, thus making pricing by the serving irrelevant.

I do understand how it can be hard to envision how large a 30-40 serving CARVED cake may be when completed \\, but I am happy to know that you had more than enough cake to serve your guests. I would much rather my clients have more, than less.

Again, I wish you and XXX a very happy married life and I look forward to seeing you at your one year anniversary for your fresh tier.

I have sent the tasting fee back to you and it should be there in a few short days.

Have a wonderful honeymoon!

Bridezilla

Some women only get married for the wedding and bragging rights.

If she really loved her husband and how lucky she is, she would not be complaining about a cake being to big.

In my culture, the bigger the cake the better!
Even if there are only twenty people coming to a birthday party, i order a cake
That feeds a hundred.

And our wedding cakes, fugetaboutit! Sky's the limit.

My 2 cents, maybe she tought that the groom cake made her cake look " small ". Like if they put them one right next to the other. But not that it's the OP's problem, what was ordered was delivered.

Perhaps...but she wanted the groom's cake presented. The bridal cake was out all evening...the groom's cake did not come out until later. So strange...I needed it a certain size to serve everyone. Anyhow, I need to brush it off and move on!

You don't have anything to apologize for and I wouldn't have given her back a dime! She got more than she bargained for...why would anyone be upset about that? I think MY email would have said...
'So happy to hear you had plenty of cake to feed everyone! So often with carved cakes it's hard to calculate the exact number of servings--and I believe we covered all that in our correspondence that I can send to you if you have any questions.

If you wrap your cake leftovers in cling wrap it will freeze nicely and you can enjoy it when you return from your honeymoon!

Best wishes!'

If she never used you again...would you be upset?
